Monetizing your Blog with Information Products

The digital age is all about information. You can always find answers on your smartphones, pcs, macs or tablets. As our society digests information, more content is produced to satisfy a seemingly insatiable need. The need to call Big Momma to ask how to treat a sore or to ask a neighbor for a great dinner recipe is gone. All we have to do is jump on the internet to learn, get help, be entertained, socialize or kill time.

We are all programmed to seek out information. Some believe convenience is the reason the internet has gained popularity. Consumer reporting agencies’ research shows that people look for online recommendations before they make a purchase. And we can’t discount the enormity of social media websites like Facebook, which we use to peer into our friends lives.

Bloggers are in a unique space. We have the ability to leverage society’s insatiable need for information while carving out a substantial income stream. We build brands that our audiences get to know, like and trust. We get excited about creating content to address our readers’ needs. And, we position ourselves to be thought leaders and authorities in our niche.

Bloggers have a multitude of choices to build revenue streams. There are passive income streams and direct income streams. Passive choices include opportunities like blog ads, ad networks, affiliate sales, sponsorships and paid posts. I refer to these as passive because they require other decision makers. In most cases, we have to accept the rates given to us based on the marketplace, or our rate is tied to our blog traffic. Information products are direct income streams. They include items bloggers create to sell, such as eBooks, webinars, video training, online courses, work books and printables.

Of all the ways to make income from blogging, I am willing to argue that selling information products is the smartest and most profitable. Why? The answer is control. In the passive income model, there is someone else driving the bus and calling the shots. They determine the bloggers’ rate of pay. In the direct business model, the blogger decides everything. They are not limited in any way. As long as they create something the market wants, and is willing to pay for, the blogger wins.

How can you be Successful with Information Products

It pays to have a platform. Bloggers geared up to create lucrative financial channels with information products, will have an active and engaged audience. There is no magic number. Whether you have 100 blog followers or 1000, what matters is the percentage who respond to your calls. Your platform should also include a strong network of peers, online and offline. A social media presence is necessary to sell online- whether you choose Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest or something else.

Content is King. You should have a storehouse of blog posts before jumping into the product market. If for no other reason than you’ve demonstrated the discipline to produce content regularly, you’ll want that experience. It
