2.5 m (981⁄2 in) of fine, strong linen string

1. Trace the bird template (see Patterns) and cut out.

2. Work a piece of clay and roll out to a thickness of around 3mm (1⁄8 in).

3. Place the bird template on the clay and run the craft knife around the edges to cut out. Pierce a hole in the tail with the skewer. Smooth the edges by moistening them slightly and leave to dry.

4. Make beads in different diameters as follows: 10 beads 1 cm (3⁄8 in) in diameter, 100 beads 1.5 cm (5⁄8 in) in diameter and 40 beads 2 cm (3⁄4 in) in diameter. Pierce with the skewer, smooth with water, and use the skewer to create patterns on some of them. Leave to dry thoroughly.

5. Fold the string in half, slip the loop into the hole in the bird’s tail, then pass the two ends through the loop and pull to attach the bird.

6. Thread the 10 small beads onto the two strands, then separate the two strands. Thread 50 medium beads and 20 large beads onto each side. Tie firmly to close, then slip the two ends of the string into the beads on each side.
