The Shunning

I ARRIVE AT THE COMPOUND in way better spirits than I’ve been in since I was arrested on my wedding night.

I now have a plan that will take care of everything and tie all the loose ends with a neat little bow on top.

The Light is good to the ones who follow It and have faith and especially to the ones who become one with It.

I have a big smile on my face when I park in front of the biggest house in the compound.

I live in a mansion by any standards, but the magnificent opulence of Callie’s house would make anything look shabby.

Obviously I’m not worried because soon I’ll be able to build something even grander, something worthy of The Light.

I smile as I step into the living room of my house where Delaney, her parents and the Bergers are waiting for me.

“Good evening everyone,” I greet them, immediately noticing Delaney’s tear stained face. “So, who would like a drink while someone explains to me why my evening at my fiancée’s house was so rudely interrupted? Dr Berger? Judge Connelly? Is whiskey ok with everyone? I know Andy loves a good single malt just like I do. Obviously our Peter is still underage,” I say jovially, lowering myself into the armchair closest to the spot where Delaney is sitting, clasping her mother’s hand with white-knuckle force.

My smile widens and I clear my throat, throwing a pointed look at the women. “I guess I’ve been busy between courting my fiancée and overseeing the completion of our compound, helping the new pastor in Shell Cove and planning the new churches in San Francisco and LA. And while I’ve been physically absent things have been slipping. I suppose we’ll organize a nice seminar, something that will serve as orientation for my new spouse and as a refresher for the women who shouldn’t need reminding how the mission of the enlightened woman is to serve her spouse and the other men in her community. That’s especially true for the women that belong in the inner circle, like every woman present in this room.”

Finally Delaney’s mother understands the meaning of my words and disentangles her fingers from her daughter’s to go pour me and the other men in the room the drinks I requested.

I wait silently, nodding when I’m offered a crystal tumbler with a double shot of my favorite black label whiskey and swirling the amber colored liquid in the glass as I ponder my next words.

My eyes go from the two sets of parents, to a red faced Peter Berger, to Delaney but my next question is addressed to my deputy, Andrew Greggs. “So do I understand correctly that the reason I was called here, interrupting my evening and disrupting my plans for this entire week is that Delaney and Peter have been caught fornicating in Delaney’s room earlier today?”

The little whore has the decency to flinch, which in itself is an admission of guilt, if you ask me.

“Aaron—” Peter Berger starts and I nip his disgusting insubordination in the bud.
