Chapter 17

Jack

Jack flicked on the light beside the bed and found himself staring at the device in wonder. They had been surprised to see new technology in the inn and had tried to figure out how it worked before going to sleep.

“It’s like magic, isn’t it?” Lana said as she glanced at the light.

“It must seem like it for the people who can’t cast a light orb,” Jack agreed. “We better hurry, the dawn comes fast.”

Lana tossed him a chunk of bread and cheese from her bag. Jack ate it while he packed things and layered his cloaks. It only took a few minutes for them to meet Stann in the hall.

“Morning,” Stann said as they fell into step with him before heading out to the cold dark street. Jack and Lana were pushed back by the blast of blowing snow when the door opened. Stann had blocked some of the icy pellets with his broad back, but once he stepped away, Jack was surrounded by the swirling snow. He could only see a few feet ahead where the light from the inn glowed. Jack pulled the hood of his cloak tighter and followed Stann down the narrow street. Lana trudged through the deep snow with frequent glances behind them. More people appeared out of doorways and joined their trek towards the city gates. Jack and Stann nodded as the mine workers joined them, they had the resolute faces of men who knew the day would be long and hard.

After several minutes they turned a corner and suddenly tall city gates rose above them. The metal was thick and well-constructed. Metal webbing ran the length of the gate to where it met the wide moat. Steam rose off the water and created thick layers of fog and mist. As the winds shifted, the blowing snow moved the layers of moisture and Jack could see glimpses of the road leading out of the city towards the mine. Metal fencing had been run along the road on both sides ending in another gate at the entrance of the mine. Jack could see the dim lights of the entrance as figures moved around in anticipation of the miners.

Stann had recognized Hoed and the rest of the scaffold builders and waved them over. They clapped Jack on the back as they greeted him.

“Morning! It’s a miserable day out here but the mine will be warmer, and no snow will obscure our sight,” Hoed said cheerfully.

“Something to look forward to,” Jack said as he tried to look past the city gates.

“They will open the gates and then we make our way towards the mine. The guards along the road have weapons if there is any trouble but in this weather we shouldn’t have any.”

“Do animals attack here?” Lana asked.

“Yah, sometimes but the defenses go a good job of holding them back. They have to be pretty hungry to risk the guards and gates,” Hoed answered distractedly. He was looking around the crowd.

“Looking for someone?” asked Jack.
