Chapter 24. Fundraiser, Prison Style

I planned on doing some quick stickman paintings to send to my Dad, so he could send me some of my money, and it would go into my current account. I needed some clothes and new shoes, it didn’t matter how many PJ’s of shine I sold, I couldn’t use that money to buy anything from the store.

I could buy any stuff from an inmate, but it would always be taken in a search if it wasn’t purchased legally and on my property sheet displayed prominently in my cell. I wanted to go shopping, and it appeared that art was my ticket to a new pair of shoes.

I played with the paint and fell in love with the idea of expressing a thought through an image. I could spend hour after hour lost in the process, as I still do today with great joy. I learned a painting’s never done fast, but I needed something to send out.

I did a stickman series on some canvas boards for easy shipping and sent them to my Dad. When I was mailing them out, the hobby craft guy was very kind and wished me the best of luck when I told him I expected everything to sell very fast.

I was called back to his office three days later when a money order for five hundred dollars had been sent to me for the payment of my art.

I was all smiles thinking of the stuff I’d buy, but Mr. Hobby guy wasn’t pleased and said I was running a scam, that my shit wasn’t art worth five hundred bucks.

I asked him what makes him the judge of the value of art.

He told me the keys in his pocket make him God, and He’s the judge of everything.

I accepted that as reality and asked the Almighty what he thought was the best way for a guy to make some money with hobby craft.

He was a generous deity and passed on some more of his wisdom.

He showed me some leather craft orders that a guy had made and was mailing to his customers. There were a few belts, some wallets, and a motorcycle saddle bag.

Hobby God was very adamant in his faith in custom leather work, and by the time I’d left his office, he had forgiven my art sales. After all, I reinvested the funds into all of the tool suggestions he made to start carving up the leather hides of what might have been one of my Moo Honeys one day.

It took a couple of weeks for all the leather and tools to arrive, but I was probably the happiest asshole in prison that day.

An older guy on the range already doing some leather work was at my side as I unpacked all the shit. He explained what everything was for and what it did to this kid in a candy store.

He would be my leather mentor extraordinaire for a few years, always having an answer for my relentless questions. I can still hear his voice today when I’m carving an image into a piece of leather.
