The next day, Hayley was hanging out on the tack-room porch when Lizzie sought her out.

“What’s up?” Lizzie asked.

“Nothing. I’m good.” Hayley had just walked Cool Kid out to the meadow and was taking a break before she joined the others in the house for dinner. She had resigned herself to staying back at Stardust with Zak and Tom while the others worked.

“You’re a terrible liar, Hayley. Did you know that?” Lizzie noted.

“What do you mean?”

“Your face is an open book. You’re not feeling good at all, are you?”

Hayley sighed then shrugged.

“So . . . do you want to drive with Kellie and me to Wyoming and be our navigator?” Lizzie said after a long, thoughtful pause.

“Me?”

“Yes, you. You’re not saying no to a long weekend with your parents, are you?”

“You’re giving me time off to see my family?”

“Three days, that’s all. You plan the route for us and we drop you off Friday evening in Jackson Hole. We pick you up early Tuesday to drive back to Stardust.”

Hayley didn’t have to think about it for more than a second. “You bet!” she said with a grin. She ran ahead to the dining room to tell the others.
