Oops
"Damn," I groaned, stopping in my tracks. Everyone, apart from Boris, looked around nervously.
"What?" asked Aunty, the Trousers of Awesomeness flaring, ready to launch her at an attacker.
"We left Furball behind. We'll have to go back and get him." I felt sick even considering such a thing, but he was part of the team now.
"No way," said Aunty.
"You're kidding, right?" asked Mimi.
"If it was one of your panthers, would you go back? And where are they, by the way?"
"Of course I would, but that's different. They're family. And they're here, of course. Watching." Mimi nodded at a row of garages further down the street. Two large, formidable silhouettes could be seen on the flat rooftops.
"How long have they been there?" I wondered.
"A while," she said noncommittally.
"You could have used them to escape," I said, not a question.
"I could. Thought I'd see what kind of man you were. If you were really my enemy."
"I think you are one sneaky lady."
"You could be right. So watch your back, mister."
I nodded. I would.
"So, who's with me?" I asked. Even Boris looked away, I was on my own.
"Pete saves the day once more," came the throaty cry of my tiny friend. He flew up and vanished then returned a moment later screaming with joy as he rode the back of Furball. They came pelting down from the sky like a miniature Death riding a black stallion. The lone bird of the apocalypse.
Furball slammed into my chest and I caught him. He rumbled contentedly, rolled up into a tight ball, and then was still. No dreamtime for me, it seems, which I wasn't sure was good or bad. Being taken away from all this would have been nice.
"Thanks, Pete, you're a real buddy."
"Don't you forget it. Now, if that's all, I have a hot chick waiting for me. Man, you should see her tail feathers."
I saluted, Pete whacked himself on the beak with a wing, poked his tongue out at Aunty, and was gone.
"I hate that bird," moaned Aunty.
"We'd be burning in hell if it wasn't for him," I pointed out.
"I know, but he still drives me nuts."
We continued on our way, and as we neared the garages the panthers jumped down silent as shadows. Mimi hugged them while they swished their tails happily. Both gave me a warning look. Don't mess with our mistress or we'll rip your throat out. I got the message loud and clear.
