“Again, please.”

“See these little jags in the lettering?” Christian asked. “There are little tick marks on either side of the letters. Little slashes that look like wires.”

Susanne walked right up close to the screen. The letters looked like they had sprouted hairs. My God, it’s so obvious. She spun around and boomed, “If we can read this, then anyone with a computer screen can. Which is exactly what Darren Phillips must want. Christian, call our media liaison officer and see if he can cap this story for a few hours. Dozens of reporters will already have seen this. Who knows Morse code?”

Jimmy Contreras stepped forward.

An hour later, a jumble of letters appeared on the theater screen. Contreras had deciphered the Morse in fifteen minutes, but further progress had proved elusive.

“What’s the status from encryption?” asked Susanne.

Ted Blinky said, “They’re not hopeful, ma’am. It’s a crude code but it’s quite effective. Phillips never repeats an instruction, so we can’t nail down any letters. Encryption is attempting to crack the message in reverse, churning it through the mainframe with locations in Mexico and dates, but Phillips was smart enough to skip around to throw us. Plus, I think he’s sprinkled in bogus letters.”

“Our best bet is finding this Gavin Kelly that the message is meant for, ma’am,” Christian Collins chimed in. “That’s who ‘GK’ is. He’s the key to the whole thing.”

“Why Kelly?” Susanne asked.

Christian shrugged. “He’s his best friend. Presumably only he understands the reference. They were in the Marines together. They were roommates. I still have the brief I typed up yesterday. It’s not complete . ”

“Put it up.”
