She said she felt very bad, and was in dreadful pain in her stomach. Her face was very much swollen. She was dreadfully thirsty and sick, and had diarrhoea and could not keep anything down. She said she felt very bad before this.

Apparently she had been doing some washing at Mrs Amelia Winters’s house in Church Street, and felt ill. She was given brandy. She had also been sick.

Mrs Elizabeth Frost had not been neglected. Mrs Winters and Thomas Frost, Mrs Elizabeth Frost’s son, had been to see her regularly, usually once a day, and they had brought her food, including beef tea, whisky, brandy and oranges. But the beef tea made the patient sick and the brandy burnt her mouth. Dr Macnaughton was called in. Mrs Winters said Mrs Frost was suffering from bronchitis, according to the doctor. Mrs Dalamain wanted a second opinion and was to call in Dr Hingston, the parish doctor, on 6 February. Hingston suggested removal to an infirmary, but Macnaughton disagreed and became very angry.

Death was on 7 February. Macnaughton wrote the death certificate. He thought she had been suffering from chronic alcoholism, as well as bronchitis and a weak heart, based on her symptoms. He said,
