Only think that while we have been wondering where she was or where she could have got to, that she was lying here in the canal within sight of our windows, only 50 yards away and we knew nothing about it.

For the middle classes the nineteenth century was a golden age for servants. Most professional people, as well as those of independent means, possessed at least one; many had two or three domestic servants. These were usually female, so could not command the wages of their male equivalents. Kensington apart, in the late Victorian era, Ealing had most servants per head of population. In 1911 there were 68 servants per 100 households, compared to 23 per 100 in London. The lot of servants was variable, but few had such a fate as Sarah Jane Higgs.
