CHAPTER 33
Second Lieutenant Atticus Cranston sat in a threadbare tapestry tub chair in his room in the officerâs quarters. By the dim light of an oil lamp, heâd finally gotten down to reading a translation of The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky, a graduation gift from his sister. So far, its Russian doom and gloom bored him, and when someone knocked on his door, he was glad of the distraction.
Expecting a soldier, he was surprised to come face-to-face with Sara Lark. The woman, who had obviously been at pains to improve her appearance, smiled and said, âI wondered if you could use a little company, Lieutenant.â
âWell, I was reading,â Cranston said.
Sara nodded. âThen Iâll leave you alone.â
âNo, please come in,â Cranston said. âSorry, that was quite rude of me.â
âIâm only a whore,â Sara said. âNot very good company, I suppose.â
âPlease, come in.â
Sara stepped inside, and Cranston directed her to the tub chair. But she said, âIâll sit here, on the corner of the bed.â
She looked around his cramped quarters, and Cranston said, âSecond lieutenants donât rate bigger rooms, Iâm afraid.â
âItâs cozy.â
âItâs hot, you mean.â
âYes, that too. What were you reading?â
Cranston picked up the book from the floor and let her see the cover.
âThe Idiot. A strange name for a book.â
âItâs a strange book.â
âWhy are you here in Fort Misery, Lieutenant?â
âCall me Atticus. It was a mistake. My posting was supposed to be Fort Concho, but a clerical error landed me here.â
âCan you leave?â
âNot now.â
âYes, I guess itâs too late. I hear Santiago Lozado has Apache with him.â
âSo I believe.â
âHe raped Maria, you know.â
âI know.â
âShe couldnât live with that. She wanted to be a virgin on her wedding night.â
âIt was a tragedy, and it was heartbreaking.â
Saraâs smile came and went. âIâm a whore, so he couldnât take my maidenhood. He beat me instead. Heâs a beast. A wild animal.â
âOne day soon I hope to end his career,â Cranston said. He took a cigar from the table beside him and said, âMay I crave your indulgence, maâam?â
âPlease do. I didnât know you smoked.â
âLieutenant Hall got me interested in the finer attributes of tobacco.â
âLieutenant Hall is a bad influence.â
âYes, he is. But doctors do say that smoking is very good for the heart and lungs. My father is almost seventy and swears by his pipe.â
Sara was silent for a few moments then said, âWill we all be alive for much longer?â
âYou mean Lozado?â
âHe will attack now he has Apache with him.â
âIâm confident that we have the forces available to defeat him.â
âNo youâre not, Atticus. I can see it in those beautiful brown eyes of yours.â
âIt will be a hard-won battle, but in the end the US Cavalry will prevail. We always do.â
âAtticus, this is a starvation post manned by the dregs of the army. Youâre not the US cavalry, youâre . . . something else.â
âYes, weâre a unit the army doesnât care to define. But ragtag and bobtail as we may be, any man will fight for his life. Sara, are you afraid?
âYes, afraid that Iâll still be alive when Santiago Lozado and his Apache take this fort.
