CHAPTER 15

Nova found them at the dining room table, going over the details of the will. While they poured over the paper work, Nova went through the motions of looking around the house for any items that she might want to take home.

By one o’clock, she was back in the attic, looking through the shelves and boxes. It would have taken months to catalog that place. She finally decided to keep the coin from the trunk and her great-grandmother’s journal, but leave everything else just as it was. It seemed wrong to remove any of Aunt Jean’s things. They belonged at Willow Hill. As soon as she was back in her room, she picked the coin up off of the night table and dropped it into her pocket. She could hear Dayton and Michael talking at the bottom of the stairs.

“I really wish we could stay, but it’s just not possible. There’s an issue with my publisher that needs my attention. I’m afraid it can’t be handled from here.”

Nova couldn’t help but smile. I guess I know where I get my ability to lie convincingly. He’s not making any sense and Michael is still buying it.

“I hope you at least come back soon. This is your house now.”

Michael’s words hit home for Nova. This is our house. It still hadn’t fully sunk in.

“I’m so glad you aren’t planning to sell it, Dayton. I know that would please Aunt Jean. This place meant the world to her.”

“I can’t imagine selling,” Dayton answered sincerely.

“Well, all right then.” Michael looked up as Nova appeared at the top of the stars. “Did you find anything you wanted?”

“Not really. I mean... I just think it should all stay here.” All except for Evelyn’s journal about time travel and the pirate coin from the attic. She smiled as she reached into her pocket and felt the cool gold medallion. For some reason, it made her feel connected to the house.

“Sounds good.” Michael seemed pleased. “And next time you’re back here, that attic door will close all the way. I’ve already planned to fix it before I leave. Your dad says he’s not all that handy around the house.” Michael grinned at Nova.

Dayton laughed. “That’s right, you two. Yuk it up.”

“That’s okay, Dad. I love you even if you can’t nail two boards together,” Nova said sweetly.

Michael looked at his watch, then back at Dayton. “Hey, it’s almost three o’clock. If you’re ready, we need to leave for the airport.”

“Yes, we do!” Dayton seemed slightly alarmed that they’d let it get so late. “Our flight leaves at four forty-five. Get your things, Nova. Mine are already down here.”

Nova dashed back to her room and grabbed her bag, then she took one last look around before pulling the door closed. As she walked down the hall, she pictured Aunt Jean at the bottom of the stairs, waiting for her. It would have been just like her to find a way to come back to the moment that would achieve the most shock value.
