With Trace in control of our destination, we arrived at the source of the buzzing in my limbs. A large gleaming building towered over its smaller neighbors and was filled with souls near their end.

I untangled my essence from Trace’s and floated forward, passing through the walls. Inside was a bustling atmosphere, with uniformed caregivers moving about constantly.

The trio hovered beside me, and Trace pointed to the ground beneath him. I shook my head, unsure if that meant he planned to visit a basement or if his feet itched.

Then he waved his hand around before pointing down again. Assuming that he wanted us to meet up here, I shrugged and drifted away.

When I glanced back, they’d left, off to reap a few more souls. The craving grew, and the buzzing became painful as I floated up to the floor above.

My directional feeling placed my next ferry at the end of the hall I’d arrived in. So, I began towards them, passing a room containing another Grim pair, a new one and their trainer by the looks of them. I paused to watch, flipping on my Sight and ignoring the increasing vibrations within.

The trainer gestured to the center of the prone body before stepping back and allowing the young Grim to begin. In seconds, a wave of energy rolled over me. Too much energy spewed into the universe, the young one unable to convert much of it.

I sucked up what I could, using it to calm the craving inside while the staff went into action. The caregivers would fail to bring the body back, but they didn’t know that yet. Everything in the room seemed typical, and I almost left.

But before I could move on, the soul darted towards me, likely due to a lack of being fully latched. The young one rushed after their loose responsibility as the trainer watched.

Many souls had been lost to inadequate twining or kids that couldn’t handle the sensations the moment of death brought. Either the kid would grab it and learn, or the soul would be doomed to roam until it grew tired of doing so.

If I’d been watching the scene before I discovered Earth, I would have just let it pass. But it wasn’t before, and I’d learned what they went through. They suffered, still feeling while they roamed.

The soul aimed for the door, locked in the mindset of their physical life, and there it found me. Reaching out, I shot a thread into it, wrapping my own essence around some of its soul. When the kid arrived shortly after, I held out my hand, offering it back. Hesitantly, their arm lifted before they gripped the soul tightly.

Ignoring the bowing kid, my eyes glanced up at the trainer to find their arms folded across their chest as they floated towards us. Cranky bitch.

Needing to take possession of my ferry so I could appease the hunger, I left them to sort it out and shot to the last room. There I found a being buried beneath so much equipment, I almost couldn’t see their body.
