FIFTEEN

Later that night, I was at home on my couch, wrapped in a blanket, and watching the evening news. The discovery of the submerged car was the lead story. According to the report, the authorities had yet to determine the identities of the bodies.

There was a message from Edgar Marsh on my voice mail. “I’ve just heard from the police,” he said. “They’ve positively ID’d Alison as one of the…” He couldn’t finish. “Please give me a call,” he said before hanging up, his voice little more than a soft rasp.

I shut off the TV and stared at its darkened screen, my figure reflected in the glass. The phone rang. This time it was Todd. “Hey, Glenn, I just checked in with the boys at the lab, and they ID’d the remains as Bill Bertram and Alison Marsh.”

“So I heard. Edgar Marsh left me a message on my voicemail.”

“They don’t know too much just yet. Those bodies had been down there for a long time. They had been shot multiple times, and the level of decomposition in that environment is consistent with the two being murdered on January 29th. Also, whoever did this caught Bertram by surprise. They found his service revolver in the trunk, and it hadn’t been fired.”

“Anything else?”

“Yes, do you know a guy named Gerry Lombardo?”

“Sure, I saw him a few days ago.”

“That’s what he says. He said you had shown him a photo of Bill Bertram, and he recognized him as a guy who had stayed at his motel on January 29, registering under the name of Scott Richter. A fire started in his room. I guess the arson investigator has been giving Lombardo a hard time. He was on the horn to the police the second you left him.”

“I don’t blame him.”

“Neither do I, but you made yourself some enemies downtown when you told that guy Scott Richter was Bill Bertram. Captain Montanez is about ready to have you drawn and quartered. He says you compromised the work of the Joint Terrorism Task Force.”

“I didn’t say one word about what Bill was doing or the Joint Terrorism Task Force. I simply told Lombardo that Scott Richter was Bill Bertram’s alias.”

“Regardless, consider yourself number one with a bullet at the top of Montanez’s shit list.”

“Great.”

“I’ll try to smooth things over for you.”

“Thanks, I appreciate it. Is that it?”

“Homicide’s none too happy that you didn’t tell them about the motel because they think it’s where the murders occurred and that you’re holding out on them.”

“What can I say, client confidentiality. Anything I find out is for Edgar Marsh’s ears and Edgar Marsh’s ears only.”

“So, why should you expect me to help you out?”

“I don’t, but I appreciate it. Anything else?”

“No, just that Homicide notified the victims’ next of kin, but you knew that.”

“Yeah, I still need to call Mr. Marsh back. Who notified them?”

“Doug Greshing. Conrad turned the case over to homicide, and he was the catching detective. I imagine he’ll be heading up the investigation from here on out.
