Chapter Seven

Sawyer

I’ve never considered myself to be a lucky guy.

I’m not necessarily unlucky.

I’ve just been dealt enough shitty hands, and gotten enough short-ended sticks to build a log cabin up in the mountains.

But considering I have no need to raffle prizes, or scratch-off lottery tickets, or ever really had enough money to go gambling in Vegas, my luck, or lack thereof, has never bothered me.

I’ve lived my life the way my father always told me to:

I’ve kept my head down, worked hard, and avoided emails from online foreign princes, or internet cam girls asking for money.

But when the brass from the DoD politely “requested” that Mr. Foster and his children build and install the Chimera weapon system on three additional F-22’s…well, let’s just say I felt as though I’d won every raffle, lottery, and gamble the world had to offer.

Because this meant that Naomi would be staying in Phoenix for another three months.

At her father’s request we kept our relationship a secret while at the base.

For the most part anyway.

I may have fucked her rotten in the showers one night after everyone else had gone home.

And once in an obnoxiously tiny storage closet, despite the fact that I nearly impaled my ass cheek on the handle of a musty old mop bucket.

But I didn’t care.

Hell, it wasn’t my fault, the woman was just irresistible, and worth every single punishment or the risk of any sanction I might’ve received.

Outside of the hangar, we were inseparable.

She spent her nights at my house, and we spent our weekends hiking, boating and fucking.

Every minute I spent with her felt better than the last, and it was the happiest I’d felt in a long time.

Perhaps ever.

Yet, in the peripherals of my mind I knew our little Xanadu life had an expiration date that was fast approaching, and at some point, in the near future she was going to go back to Chicago.

And while I wasn’t worried about being able to see her as often as my job would allow…I knew it wouldn’t be the same as being able to come home to her every day.

Which is why I decided to do the thing I swore I’d never do again…and propose.

Given that her brother and I had spent a lot of time together, he was the first person I told about my plan. He was moderately supportive, even going as far as to sacrifice a Saturday afternoon railing Danica and go ring shopping with me.

However, Eric did warn me to be prepared for her to decline my proposal, explaining that Naomi had an inherent fear of marriage and commitment.

I already knew of course.

I knew about her ex-fiancé.

And I knew about how her mother had struggled with drug addiction ever since Naomi was born, and how viscerally they fought until one day, after picking a fight with everyone in the house, Naomi told her mother to leave and never come back.

And that’s exactly what she did.

The saddest part wasn’t that they found her dead in a back alley, with a needle in her arm.
