Persephone

My heart won’t stop racing. The conversation in the room doesn’t help. Oliver has taken my mother somewhere else on the mountain, somewhere she can’t talk to anyone, and there are more guards outside.

Hades is fighting with his brothers.

Not one of them raises his voice. It doesn’t matter. The intensity is like shouting. The intensity reminds me of my mother, who rarely shouted at me. She only left bruises on my arms and stared into my eyes while she warned me what men would do to me.

“It can’t go on,” Hades says. One reason he doesn’t speak loudly is because he has Daisy on his shoulder. She cried and cried after my mother screamed, and wouldn’t settle until he held her. “I won't allow it.” His jaw is set, and even if I didn’t know him I’d be terrified. He’s at his most dangerous right now. Quietly lethal. “I want this finished.”

Conor has pressed his entire body to Hades’ legs. I doubt he’ll leave until the tension in the room lets up. It’s the most protection he can offer Hades. And Daisy.

“Then it’s a matter of who, and how,” Zeus says. Brigit has her arm around his waist, rubbing at his back. She knows things about him I don’t. I stepped back to give them their space in the middle of the living room but she stepped forward. Artemis sleeps in Daisy’s bassinet, brought from the bedroom. The conversation doesn’t bother her. Since her birth, she’s slept in rooms while we talk around her. Which is good. I don’t think we could stand to have the babies out of our sight right now.

“We don’t have to decide this tonight,” says Poseidon. Ashley stands next to me, her gaze on her husband. “We shouldn’t decide this tonight.”

“Bullshit,” says Zeus. “We went there in the first place to do this.”

“We hadn’t decided then either.” Poseidon folds his arms over his chest. “You told me not to shoot her twenty minutes ago.”

“I’ve changed my mind.”

“I haven’t.” Hades pats Daisy’s back in an easy rhythm. “I think she has an incurable sickness. I would do the same for an animal. It’s a mercy, really.”

This is too much. I step forward into the circle, draw myself up to my full height. Hades’ eyes snap to mine. “It’s not.”

“You think I wouldn’t kill her for you?” In his dark eyes I see all the fear he’s bottled up from the past few hours. All the old pain my mother caused him. Painkillers can’t touch that. They never will, and neither will murdering my mother.

“I know you would kill her for me. But it’s needless.” I look at them all in turn now, my heart in my throat, certainty in my veins. “It would be needless, and it would be wrong.”

“It’s the only right thing.” Zeus’s voice is so weighted with some secret past that it makes the air in the room heavier. Brigit looks up at him, scanning his face. A lifetime ago he told me he only loved once.
