Chapter Nine
The first few weeks in the same home went by without a hitch. Dave cooked dinner at night. Robbie got home late from working hard at the office. He enjoyed the company after a long workday. There was nothing better than knowing you were on your way to the person who made you feel as if you were walking on air. That was how Robbie made him feel and that feeling never faltered. Not once. Not even when he began to grow distant.
It appeared the honeymoon period was over, or at least that was what Dave put Robbie's sudden change of attitude down to. It had been almost a year together and they seemed to be drifting slightly. Dave could not pinpoint a problem, just that things were not the same as they used to be.
One night, after another silent dinner across the table from each other, Dave plucked up the courage to ask what was really going on. He had to know. He had to get a straight answer out of Robbie. He could not go on like this. Dave was terrified that this could mark the end of their happy engagement. He cleared his throat and secured his lovers attention.
âUh, Robbie, I have been meaning to ask...â his throat became dry all of a sudden. It was as if his mind was willing to confront Robbie, but his body had other ideas, hindering him at every possible point. He took a sip of water, a long sip.
âYeah sure, anything. What's on your mind?â Robbie replied. Hi chirpy demeanor was not fooling anyone. Dave thought about how to word his thought. He did not want it to sound accusing, he was merely putting his mind at ease.
âYou have just been, I don't know, different lately. I can't put my finger on it but something has changed.â he stated. He looked back at Robbie, whose facial expression had changed dramatically. His smile faded and was replaced with a frown, the exact opposite of what it had been before. It finally reflected his true feelings, but Dave still wanted to know why this was.
âI didn't want to tell you this, just in case nothing comes of it,â he began. That was not a good start. Dave could feel his stomach churning. His heart ached. He did not know what was going on yet, but it did not sound good. So much for thinking that it was actually nothing. Of course if he felt that way there was something up.
He had to excuse himself. He could not contain it, the thought of what could be coming, that this could be the end made him sick to his stomach.
âExcuse me,â he said, muffled through the hand which held his mouth tightly as he ran to the bathroom. He could her Robbie get up from his chair and follow him. He locked the door behind him and hunched over the toilet bowl. Robbie continued the conversation from the outside. His words were softened by the barrier of the door between them, but could still be heard.
