MORNING RUSHED at them sooner than Jonah would have liked, even if Luis had given everyone on the case the morning off. They just had some final paperwork to do that would probably take the better part of an afternoon, and Jonah appreciated the opportunity to sleep in after the unexpectedly late night. He woke up, not quite remembering that A.J. was there until something warm next to him stretched and yawned.

“Morning.” A.J. smiled sleepily and gave him a peck on the cheek.

Jonah felt like he needed to be polite and be a gracious host, even though he really just wanted the morning alone to process everything.

“There’s probably some pizza left? Or I think I may have some tuna and mustard? I don’t really keep—”

“Nope! I’ve invaded your space and ate your pizza. The least I can do is take care of breakfast. You go do whatever you do in the morning, and I’ll be back in a bit.” A.J. jumped out of bed excitedly and, as much as he wasn’t crazy about sharing a bed with A.J., Jonah immediately missed the warmth of his skin next to his. Confusion was rapidly becoming too weak a word to describe his feeling on the whole mess he was in.

A.J. insisted on making Jonah pancakes and excitedly ran down to the grocery store to get the ingredients and a spare toothbrush.

Jonah was so used to food trucks and late-night diners those days that a home-cooked meal seemed less plausible than aliens landing in the parking lot. Jonah stepped out of the shower and the incredible smell of A.J. cooking a real goddamned breakfast in his kitchen made him feel just a bit domestic and a whole lot guiltier than he had felt the night before. A.J. was amazing. And Jonah did not deserve a bit of him if he was going to sit around and mope over his stupid crush on Rafael.

There was fresh coffee and a stack of syrup-soaked pancakes with bacon and eggs waiting for him. Jonah ran his fingers through his damp hair to try to make sense of his curls and made a big show of kissing A.J. on the cheek before he sat down.

“This is crazy. How did you whip up all of this? I don’t think I even own a pan.”

A.J. grinned. “Well, Saturday is pancake day, but I made a special exception for Thursday. Magical things happen on pancake day, you know. Eat up. Garcia is planning something for tonight to celebrate, I just know it. She’s already texted me three times and is being very vague.”

Jonah stretched and speared a pancake with his fork, dropping it onto a plate. Also a thing he didn’t know he owned. “And I suppose that claiming exhaustion and politely declining isn’t going to get anyone out of this?”

A.J. popped a piece of bacon in his mouth and shook his head. “Not a chance. I learned that lesson a long time ago.”

Breakfast was delicious, and they cleaned up the kitchen together, A.
