CHAPTER IV
Salazar
As much as I hate to admit it, Zenobia is right. The last thing I need is for the human witch to get overly confident. She must remember her place, and not because Iâm a power-hungry monster who wants her submissiveâI am, but thatâs beside the pointâbut because it will be safer for her. Sheâs under my protection, yet after our last confrontation, Lachlan has started to gather allies against me. He thinks I donât know, but after centuries as an assassin itâs pretty damn hard for anything to take me by surprise.
Iâm soaking in a hot bath when the servant fairies open the door to admit Neveah into my bath chamber. She stops dead in her tracks, the obstinate expression washing off of her sweet face, her jaw dropping.
âWhat in the worldââ
Surely, me in a bathtub, attended by fluttering fairies and a couple of fae women isnât what she expected.
âBetter get used to sights like this,â I tell her. âNext time I might have you over to attend to me yourself.â
âYou wouldnât.â
I cock an eyebrow. âI can have you do anything, remember?â
She swallows audibly, knotting her hands together in front of her lap, while my eyes rake down her body. I like seeing her like this, all flushed and embarrassed, stripped of all defenses. Sheâs wearing the white linen robe that marks her as a slave inside the house, even though in school she and her friends are allowed to wear normal clothes. The possibility of having her run those sponges along my body lingers a little too long inside my head.
She clears her throat. âIâve never gotten the chance to thank you,â she says. âFor Lachlan, a few days ago.â
âI was only protecting my property. Which is what you are.â
âFor a moment there I thought you did it from the goodness of your heart.â
âYou know by now thatâs not my strong suit.â
âNo. Youâre the prince of the shadow faeâbasically a demon.â
âAnd you better not forget it.â I spread my arms over the edges of the tub, letting the fairies run their sponges along my shoulders and arms. I can sense their overflowing pheromones, and I wonder whether I should have them wash me below my waistline in front of Neveah. I wonder what it would feel like to see the little human get jealous.
âAnyway, thatâs not why I sent for you.â
âThen why did you?â
âCorvinâs tomb. I want us to go there together.â
âWhy together?â
âNo one better than you to sniff it out in the caves.â
Neveah stares at me with wide eyes, while the servants fidget. She wouldnât know this, but in my world, what Iâm offering her is considered an honor.
âYouâre a logos witch. Iâm going to need you to open that tomb anyway,â I say.
She scratches her forearm like what I just said gave her a rash. âBut you saw what magic did to me in the headmistressâ office. It was too strong for my body to channel, it messed me up.â
âYou do need more practice, itâs true.
