CHAPTER IV

Salazar

As much as I hate to admit it, Zenobia is right. The last thing I need is for the human witch to get overly confident. She must remember her place, and not because I’m a power-hungry monster who wants her submissive—I am, but that’s beside the point—but because it will be safer for her. She’s under my protection, yet after our last confrontation, Lachlan has started to gather allies against me. He thinks I don’t know, but after centuries as an assassin it’s pretty damn hard for anything to take me by surprise.

I’m soaking in a hot bath when the servant fairies open the door to admit Neveah into my bath chamber. She stops dead in her tracks, the obstinate expression washing off of her sweet face, her jaw dropping.

“What in the world—”

Surely, me in a bathtub, attended by fluttering fairies and a couple of fae women isn’t what she expected.

“Better get used to sights like this,” I tell her. “Next time I might have you over to attend to me yourself.”

“You wouldn’t.”

I cock an eyebrow. “I can have you do anything, remember?”

She swallows audibly, knotting her hands together in front of her lap, while my eyes rake down her body. I like seeing her like this, all flushed and embarrassed, stripped of all defenses. She’s wearing the white linen robe that marks her as a slave inside the house, even though in school she and her friends are allowed to wear normal clothes. The possibility of having her run those sponges along my body lingers a little too long inside my head.

She clears her throat. “I’ve never gotten the chance to thank you,” she says. “For Lachlan, a few days ago.”

“I was only protecting my property. Which is what you are.”

“For a moment there I thought you did it from the goodness of your heart.”

“You know by now that’s not my strong suit.”

“No. You’re the prince of the shadow fae—basically a demon.”

“And you better not forget it.” I spread my arms over the edges of the tub, letting the fairies run their sponges along my shoulders and arms. I can sense their overflowing pheromones, and I wonder whether I should have them wash me below my waistline in front of Neveah. I wonder what it would feel like to see the little human get jealous.

“Anyway, that’s not why I sent for you.”

“Then why did you?”

“Corvin’s tomb. I want us to go there together.”

“Why together?”

“No one better than you to sniff it out in the caves.”

Neveah stares at me with wide eyes, while the servants fidget. She wouldn’t know this, but in my world, what I’m offering her is considered an honor.

“You’re a logos witch. I’m going to need you to open that tomb anyway,” I say.

She scratches her forearm like what I just said gave her a rash. “But you saw what magic did to me in the headmistress’ office. It was too strong for my body to channel, it messed me up.”

“You do need more practice, it’s true.
