Gabby

No one says anything for a very long time, each lost in their respective thoughts. Each trying not to buckle under the collective despair that’s only multiplying.

Hopelessness and fear simmer at the back of Gabby's mind as she considers the fact that they might well and truly be on their way to defeat.

Unable to sit still, she pushes to her feet, drawing the attention of everyone at the table. Sierra looks at her inquiringly but Gabby simply shakes her head. She needs a moment to clear her head and calm her racing thoughts.

With quick strides, she walks away from the table and down one of the many aisles in the library. She has no idea where she's going and she doesn't really care. All she needs right now is a quiet place.

She ends up at the alcove where they'd gathered to translate the plates. That feels like days ago.

Sitting heavily onto one of the wooden chairs, she leans her head back and closes her eyes. She wonders if this is the end for all supernaturals in Mercy City. Will they ever get their abilities back? Just the thought of the possibility makes her heart clench in fear.

She can't fathom the idea of living the rest of her life without her magic. Before she found out her father was an archangel, she planned her life out as a normal, human girl. After discovering magic, she’d fought it. Wished it wasn’t her.

But everything’s changed. After all, magic brought her Colt.

And magic is the only way they can stop the evil bearing down on them.

But now she's without it, and Gabby's suddenly left floundering with no idea what to do next.

Heavy footsteps reach her ears and she opens her eyes. She lifts her head just as Colt reaches the table and draws out a chair, which creaks softly when he sits on it. Neither of them says anything for a few seconds. Colt is watching her with a concerned expression on his handsome face.

"So, what do we do now?" Gabby mumbles, despite knowing that there's nothing left to do.

Colt remains quiet, pulling his gaze from her and scanning the shelf of books beside him. "We’ll think of something," he says, his voice heavy.

She suppresses a sigh. Although that’s all he can give her, she was hoping for a little more than that.

A shrill ringtone fills the air, cutting through the gloomy atmosphere. Gabby reaches into the pocket of her jacket and pulls out her phone. On the screen is a number she doesn't recognize. She contemplates ignoring the phone call for a second before she decides that it could be important.

Although, if it’s a telemarketer, they’ve really chosen the wrong time…

She answers the call and raises it to her ear. "Hello?"

"Hello, Gabby," a familiar voice says. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything important."

It's the dean and Gabby wonders why she's calling now. Surely she doesn't expect Gabby’s found the scroll so soon. If so, she's about to be sorely disappointed.

"No," Gabby answers. “I wasn't doing anything.
