Chapter 13
Jason speeds up. âYour house is on fire. Call the fire department.â
I scoff, as if I would ever take commands from him! Besides, what makes him think that any mortal would be better at handling this situation that me? I wonder if heâs been paying attention over the last couple of novellas. Fortunately for me, I can see far better than any mortal. âItâs not my house. Itâs around my house.â
âAround?â Jason asks, as if Iâd been the one to misspeak.
âAround my house, like little bonfires.â I squint as I also touch upon the fabric of Midgard for an Asgardian energy. I find it there, just off to the right a bit. âWhat is Thor up to?â
Jason blazes down the driveway and stops just short of the bonfires. Thor jumps out from behind one as we get out.
âSurprise!â Thor roars.
âWhat are you doing?â I shout back, my voice sounding so unimpressive against Thorâs deep boom.
Thor motions toward the house with his beefy arms. âYou have your house back. I thought Iâd give you a housewarming party.â
âHousewarming?â I am barely able to get the word out. It feels unreal.
âYes,â chimes Thor, proudly putting his hands on his hips. âAnd how else can one adequately warm up a house without fires?â
Jason cracks up. He puts his hands to his mouth, but he just canât contain his laughter. âA housewarming party, Loki!â
âYeah, I got that.â Now itâs my turn to not be amused.
Jason bends over, laughing and panting so hard he can barely breathe.
âWhereâs Fenrir?â I ask Thor, wondering if the oaf had forgotten his duty.
Thor looks down and starts to turn away. âYeah, we need to talk about that, Loki.â
âReally?â I sarcastically ask. I call my scepter to my hand and blow across the icy crystal to extinguish the flames leading directly to my door. âPut the rest of it out, Thor, then come in and weâll talk.â I make my way through the passageway of flames. The heat from the fires makes my head swoon and I feel like Iâd been out for far too long under the Asgardian sun on a long summer afternoon. I hear the skid of Jasonâs shoes over the bricks as he scrambles to catch up to me. Thereâs no way he can make it in time, I think to myself with a grin.
I turn before the doorway, standing under the protection of my porch roof and cross my arms over my chest. Jason is close, but he stops in puzzlement, probably wondering if Iâm waiting for Thor to put out the fires. Oh, I am.
I feel it coming. The moisture begins to cling to my skin as it gathers in the air.
Suddenly the sky opens up dousing the flames in a torrential downpour. Thunder booms in the distance. In one beautiful fell swoop, the bonfires are extinguished and Jason is drenched. No Golden Fleece can save him from looking like a drowned rat. I canât help myself. Now I start to laugh.
Jason glares at
