Chapter 9
Levi called Jake on the way into town to give him a brief update. He also insisted on stopping by the bank, as dirty as they were, and placing the gold nugget in a safety deposit box.
Finally, they made it to the apartment.
Mattie never realized just how small her apartment was until Levi walked in.
His broad shoulders filled the space and then some, making the one-bedroom apartment sheâd been contentedly living in feel no bigger than a closet.
Everywhere she turned, he was there, stirring her blood and raising the temperature of the room as well as her body.
As much as sheâd rather stay there and make love through the afternoon and into the evening, they needed to get cleaned up and back to the diner as soon as possible.
âDo you have the gut feeling our killer will show up at the diner today if he hasnât already been there day after day?â she asked.
Levi nodded. âLike an arsonist hanging around the fire he started?â
âYes!â Mattie walked through the room, she peeled her dirty shirt over her head. A cloud of fine dust rose from the fabric.
Levi stood near the apartment door. âIs this an invite, or are you just teasing me? I wouldnât dare assume anything.â
âSeriously?â she asked, one eyebrow hiked.
âSweetheart, youâll have to spell it out for me.â
She glanced over her naked shoulder, unclipped her bra and let it fall to the floor. âWhat do you think?â
He grinned. âI think Iâd like clarification. In this me too world we live in, a guy canât take anything for granted.â
Mattieâs lips twisted into a wry grin. âSo much for vamping. Yes. This is an invitation. Yes, I want you to join me in the shower. And yes, youâre right to ask. Now, are you coming, or do I have to extend a written invitation?â
He gripped the hem of his T-shirt and dragged it over his head, tossing it on top of Mattieâs. The combined cloud of dust rose to the ceiling. âMaybe we should deposit our clothes straight into the washer,â he suggested.
âAgreed.â Mattie led the way to the laundry closet, hidden behind bifold, louvered doors. She flung open the door, backed away and stepped out of her jeans. âI canât get over the amount of dust all over our clothes and skin.â She shoved her shirt and jeans into the front loading washer. Then she shimmied out of her panties and bra and dropped them in as well. When she turned, her eyebrows descended. âYouâve got some catching up to do. I want to get to the diner as soon as possible. So, chop-chop!â
He laughed as he shucked his boots, socks and jeans. Then he scooped Mattie up in his arms, carried her into the adjoining bathroom and set her down on the tile floor.
âI donât think Iâve ever had a man carry me to the bathroom, or anywhere else for that matter.â She stood before him. Naked. âI think I like it.â
âGood, because I like carrying you.â He winked and nodded toward the shower.
