Chapter 19
Moribrand
MORIBRAND PULLED his bag onto his shoulders, grimacing at the weight.
What had that fool girl made him stuff in there? Maybe sheâd given him wrapped stones to spite him. He took a deep breath. The air was hot and heavy. His robes stuck to his skin. Sweat ran from the curls on his head, down his cheek and into the wounds on his face, which only made him more irritable.
Kali led them out of the main chamber of the temple into a wide hall thick with shadows and fallen debris.
Moribrand couldnât help but feel an impending sense of doom. Heâd felt this way plenty of times before, but had his fortunes ever been this low? He was at the mercy of a cursed boy. And could he really even call Minnow his slave anymore? The stupid giant obeyed Jack more than him.
They were trapped beneath a mountain of ice in a dead city, and every wizard in the vicinity was without a doubt hunting them. Outside of Gale, the situation wasnât much better, given that the spirits of the North Wind were running amok in some sort of eternal winter at the behest of their mad duke.
What chance did any of them have of coming through this alive? Every time Moribrand considered that all his recent effort and pain was for someone elseâs benefit, it stoked a kind of angry unease in his chest. A nervousness that he should be doing something else, that his time was wasting away. He needed to think of a way to extricate himself from this awful circumstance as soon as possible.
When Jack had first proposed going to Argent, a part of Moribrand had been caught up in the idea of bringing down revenge on the wizards who ruled the city. Which suited him just fine, since that had been his purpose in the first place, when Jack had been hunting him on the orders of the Lady.
Moribrand had long been seeking what he thought was an ancient source of power, a secret strength which he would have used to overthrow those arrogant wizards. His scheme at the black tower in the Valley of the Ovines had failed in the end.
Those fires of revenge had cooled some by now. It was uncharacteristic for him to feel this way, he realized. There was a heaviness on him, more than the stuffed travel bag, like he was dragging a spiritual anchor everywhere he went. Heâd suffered so much recently that a part of him just wanted to be somewhere safe and comfortable.
Unfortunately, a condition of Jackâs sparing him was that he guide the boy to Argent. And now Jack was aware that Moribrand had no idea how to get there. His options were dismal.
Simply leaving was impossible, of course. He knew that by experience. The boy had proven to be a dogged pursuer in the past. Perhaps Jack wouldnât chase him this time, at least not for long. But then again, in this environment it wouldnât be easy to ditch him, and the worst part was, Moribrand had nowhere to really go.
