The Heritage Fund

The granddaddy of Alberta’s savings funds is the Heritage Savings Trust Fund. It is the biggest, oldest and most famous. If the Sustainability Fund is a debit card for the Alberta government when there is an economic emergency, the Heritage Fund is, or at least could be, an RRSP that provides permanent prosperity. This is the fund that an impressive range of people and groups — including former premier Peter Lougheed, University of Calgary economist Jack Mintz, the Canada West Foundation, and the Alberta Liberal official Opposition — have said must grow very, very big, if Alberta’s future is to be secured.

So how is it doing?
