Chapter Ten

My power nap had the desired effect. The world seemed brighter and more hopeful when I awoke and I already had a string of messages from the team harassing me to get to headquarters in time for training.

We’re meeting at the greenhouse! Tate wrote.

Is that a big deal?

It’s Abra’s pride and joy, Tate replied.

I thought you were her pride and joy.

She responded with the image of a woman laughing hysterically.

I returned to headquarters feeling refreshed and ready to fuss over Abra’s prized collection of poisonous plants.

I took the elevator to the floor labeled ‘greenhouse.’ It seemed strange that I hadn’t noticed it before—until I realized that I didn’t typically use this elevator bank. I studied the other buttons in the elevator to see what else I might’ve missed. I recognized Lab A but not Lab B. There was also an entire floor labeled ‘private,’ which I imagined housed the older members of the Pride. I couldn’t picture living under one roof with everyone. As much as I thought of them as family now, it seemed a bridge too far to live together. We spent most hours of the day together. Were the night hours really necessary?

Abra and the rest of the team were already gathered in front of the door to the greenhouse, except one.

“Where’s Evadne?” I asked.

“On an errand,” Abra said.

Tate appeared taken aback. “Alone?”

“No need for concern,” Abra said. “It’s nothing that can cause any trouble.”

Liam barked a laugh. “Evadne can cause trouble at a taco stand.”

Abra made a dismissive noise at the back of her throat. “If you must know, Kingsley Bryant asked for a favor and we opted to let Evadne fulfill the request.”

The rest of us exchanged puzzled glances.

I spoke first. “You’re sending Evadne to do a favor for Kingsley? Are you…?” I stopped myself before I said ‘mental.’

“Is that wise?” Tate interrupted, saving me.

“Are you questioning my judgment, Tate?” Abra asked.

The younger witch looked at the floor.

“I would’ve gone,” I said.

Kingsley was a strange mixture of fearsome and fragile—and sometimes both in the span of minutes. I’d spent enough time with her to know I could handle her mood swings, though. Sending Evadne was the equivalent of throwing a grenade on top of a land mine.

“I know you would have, thank you.” Abra ushered us inside the greenhouse. “But I wanted to introduce you to the greenhouse today and Evadne needs practice working with other…challenging personalities.”

“She doesn’t need practice working alone, though,” Saxon said. “She’s barely a team player as it is.”

“Your objection is noted.” Abra stepped aside to allow me a full view of the greenhouse. Thanks to a parade of large windows, light streamed in from all sides. The greenhouse spanned the entire width and length of this floor of the building. No wonder I hadn’t been to this floor yet. There was nothing to see here except rows upon rows of plants and flowers.

Liam tickled my chin. “You’re catching flies, Callie.”
