My head spins.

It’s hard enough trying to keep one Harvey straight in my head, never mind this family drama.

Tobias stares at me expectantly.

“You’re not a bad storyteller,” I muse.

“Is that all you gotta say?”

“No, no. I’m just…processing.”

He waits as patiently as possible while I formulate a response.

Unfortunately, his story gave me more questions than answers.

“So…Maddox started the fires? And Thaddeus doesn’t know that it was him?”

Tobias shrugs and shakes his head. “I don’t know. We have to assume that Maddox started the fire since he summoned us there. As for Thaddeus…I’ve been over it in my head so many times. After we left the police station, I asked Thaddeus in the car park if Maddox was okay. That I’d seen him at Harvey Camp…”

I frown. “And what did he say?”

“Oh, he snarled something like, ‘my grandson is safe.’”

I shake my head. “I’m struggling a bit with this version of Thaddeus. As long as I’ve known him, he’s been generous, kind, level-headed, helpful…”

“Yeah, well, that’s the Harvey charm.”

I smile ruefully, and turn to face him. “How do I know you’re not secretly some evil puppet master, huh?”

He grins and places his hands on my shoulders. “The good thing about me is that I was never very good at lying.”

I nod and glance out of that big window. “Why would Maddox set fire to Harvey Camp? That doesn’t make sense either.”

He follows my gaze out over the river. “The only explanation we have is that he wanted to get our scholarships revoked. And no one would believe that he’d set fire to his granddad’s buildings.”

It just doesn’t add up. “And does Thaddeus know what happened? Is he covering something up? Is he trying to mislead me? Or is he genuinely trying to get to the bottom of what happened?”

“Your guess is as good as mine.”

“I’m…I’m a bit pissed off, to be honest. If he doesn’t know what happened, why would he leak only the information about you being there, when your five friends⸺plus Maddox⸺were there too. That sounds a bit like he has a personal issue with you.”

“Again, I have no idea why. But I’d believe it. My granddad and him never saw eye to eye. But I’m, like, one of the babies of the family. I don’t get told all the reasons why things happen. They still see me as a kid.”

I pace around a bit. My head is swirling with too many strands of thought and I’m not sure where exactly to start.

Tobias watches me carefully. “What’s got you so riled up?”

I’m as surprised as he is when I explode, “How dare Thaddeus use me as a pawn to try and fuck up your reputation!”

I breathe and look over at Tobias, who has been holding onto this for years.

He’s calm, a little bemused. The way he’s looking at me…I’m not sure anyone has looked at me like that. I’m sure there’s a certain way I’m looking at him, too.

The longer I look at Tobias, who managed to put all of this family shit behind him to continue to be warm and kind, the more I feel unexpectedly emotional.
