CHAPTER 25: VANESSA

I took off my long gown and changed into the clothing provided. It consisted of a black top, matching leather pants and a jacked trimmed in red stitching. I slipped my feet into a pair of heavy black boots.

Glancing in the mirror, I smiled, satisfied with my reflection. I looked badass. Completing the image, I let my hair down, allowing my unruly, frizzy curls to fall freely down my shoulders.

Leaving my room, I headed toward Lucas’ compartment.

I knew he might be trying to trick me again, luring me to his room. But then again, was I really any safer in my own quarters?

Holding my breath, I knocked and carefully pushed open the door. Lucas sat facing me in a chair, a knowing smile spreading slowly across his face.

My heart melted, he looked so gorgeous and… tempting.

“I’ve been waiting patiently for you to come around,” he teased. “No fire witch can resist a fire demon.”

“You’re only a half-demon, Lucas.”

“Well… that only suggests you can’t resist at least half of me.”

I couldn’t help from laughing.

He continued smiling, just watching me. I still felt edgy and unsafe around him. I knew he was a dangerous and malicious creature. But there was something in him drawing me in… something irresistible and daring. I couldn’t stop from staring into those menacing yet dazzling eyes. I couldn’t help from desiring to learn how to control my power.

“Have a seat,” he motioned toward another chair.

Keeping my back straight, I walked across the room and sat down.

He looked me over, assessing every detail, his gaze penetrating and intense.

“Gorgeous,” he muttered. “Like a true fire witch.”

My cheeks burned. I had no idea why I felt flattered. I bit my lip, lowering my eyes.

What’s happening to me? Why do I react so to his compliments?

He grinned, probably realizing how strongly I was attracted to him.

“You’re fascinated by fire, aren’t you, Vanessa?” he asked.

“Yes.”

I suddenly recalled how my mother and I had never rented an apartment with a real fire place. We’d never built a campfire. At the time, I hadn’t thought anything of it. But thinking about it now, I realized she was just probably trying to keep me away from fire.

I miss her so much.

I took a deep breath, trying not to think of her.

“Adriana told me,” I said, “that wielding fire is a dark and dangerous kind of magic.”

Lucas snorted.

“Of course she did. Everything seems dark and dangerous to the people of Paradise… everything they can’t understand. Adriana is just afraid of losing her crown. She knows that a fire witch such as you could defeat her.”

“She didn’t seem to have any trouble killing off the others.”

Lucas grimaced, as if my words wounded him deeply. I detected a hint of grief in those beautiful eyes.

“You’re special and unique, Vanessa. I can sense great power in you and something more… intriguing and exciting. You’re unlike any fire witch I’ve ever known.”

I couldn’t understand why he believed in my being so special.

He smiled again. “You should know, Vanessa, that fire magic is one of the oldest and strongest forms.
