Evening drew over Asvellah City like a soft lilac veil, the natural light diminishing slowly as the temperature gradually declined. Neon signs and billboards flashed brightly around us as the street lights flickered into life down the boulevard. Warm aromas of spices and herbs from street vendors mixed with cigarettes to create a pleasant atmosphere in the central part of town. Something about the smell of tobacco engulfed me with a feeling of wistful nostalgia, reminding me of social times with friends from combat club. I took a deep breath in and felt my soul settle. I sometimes struggled with the isolation of our mountain home, and the bustle of a populated metropolis seemed to recharge me, bring me to life.
Vann strolled next to me in silence, his arm brushing against mine as we meandered down the street. Even through the thick sleeve of my jacket I registered the warmth from his body radiating through to my arm. It filled me with a peaceful comfort as I relished the security of walking through the city with company. I couldn’t remember the last time that had happened.
Vann had morphed into his Luca form and had the same confident gait, commanding presence and air of royalty, even if he wasn’t as attractive in my eyes. Would he ever be free to show his normal face in public? Will he be forced to hide his true identity forever?
We turned a corner and found the entertainment hub of the city. Bars, restaurants and clubs lined both sides of the traffic-free zone which stretched for about a kilometre towards the river. Every few steps a large display screen gig-guide advertised what was happening in each establishment that night, each attempting to draw us in and spend our money. Vann gently touched my elbow and came to a halt. “In here,” he pointed down a narrow staircase.
“Here? Why?” I skimmed over the lineup on the display. I didn’t recognise any of the band names, but then I wasn’t exactly up to speed with what was out there.
“I’m not sure,” he shrugged. “It looks like an interesting place. If it’s no good we can go somewhere else if you like.”
“Sure, let’s check it out.”
As we handed over our jackets and weapons at reception, the girl behind the counter gave us a slightly nervous look. It was normal for people around Asvellah City to carry defense but this was probably excessive, even around here. But my companion just flashed his attractive smile and she shrugged, tagged the entry pass onto the back of our hands and waved us through.
Atmospheric music drew us in to the darkened room, a wall of muggy heat from dancing bodies washed over us, a contrast to the chilled outside air. Downtempo music performed by humanoids on organic instruments created an enjoyable ambiance, a sort of soft rock-electronica fusion. Vann took me by the hand and led me to a gap in the crowd closer to the stage. I was forced to stand close to him as the faint smell of his cologne added to the intoxicating buzz.
