Chase

I spent the day worrying about Finley. I didn’t know exactly what was going on, other than that she had a meeting with her caseworker and that she’d seemed so nervous that she didn’t eat breakfast.

“Chase,” Veronica calls as I’m heading across the parking lot. “You headed down to Davie’s? Everybody’s going.”

“Uh, I think I need to head home, but thanks.” I flash her a quick smile. Then feel guilty about it, knowing that Finley called me out for using it against girls.

“Oh, come on, just for a milkshake? It won’t take long.”

I’ve reached my car and she corners me, sliding herself between me and the door. She runs her fingers down my jacket lapel. “We haven’t had much time to hang out together lately, not with you driving Finley home every day. Since she’s not here, I thought maybe you’d want to hang out.”

“Yeah, unfortunately, today isn’t any better. I told my grandmother I’d be home right after school.”

She eyes me skeptically, like she can sense the lie. “You bailed on me at the bonfire, too.”

I take a step back, gently wrangling my jacket out of her grip. “I’m not bailing on you, Veronica.”

“Sure feels like it.” She pouts.

“I’m sorry you feel like that, but really, I need to go.”

“Okay, but soon I want some time just with you.”

I grin—or grimace really—and ease past her and open the door, closing it quickly.

By now, the parking lot is empty and I’m able to exit quickly, forgetting Veronica and focusing on checking in on Finley. She’s sitting by the garage when I arrive, dressed in tennis shoes, shorts, and holding a basketball.

I don’t even turn off the car, just pull around and roll down the window.

“Wanna play?” she asks. Her eyes are rimmed in red.

I nod, pushing aside the million questions I want to ask. Instead I just say, “Yep. Let’s go.”
