The next morning, they woke up around the same time. Sloan made the coffee. Marley made the toast. They had a quick breakfast in the eat-in kitchen. Then, the knock on the door came, and Sloan looked at Marley.

“It’s okay. I’ll get it. You can stay in–”

“No, I need to do this,” Sloan said and stood up from the small table.

“Do you want me with you?”

“I’m okay.”

Sloan left the room. Marley stood up and paced. A few minutes later, she heard the men moving into the house. She didn’t know what to do, so she stayed out of the way. She moved from one room to another as they needed to do their jobs around her. When she finally heard the front door close, she went in search of Sloan. She found her in her father’s bedroom, which was now empty. Sloan was sitting on the floor with her legs crossed, staring at the wall.

“I miss him,” she said.

“I know.”

Marley moved to sit next to her on the floor.

“I think I want to go back early,” Sloan replied. “Now that his stuff is gone, this place doesn’t feel right.”

“You’d already packed it up,” Marley said.

“But it’s different now. The only stuff left is what was mine or here for guests. It’s being moved after we leave, but if we leave early, it doesn’t matter.” Sloan looked at her. “It’s not fair to you, though. We just started exploring.”

“I came here for you, Sloan. I don’t care about seeing the world. I just wanted to make sure you were okay.”

“I’m not.” Sloan sniffled and rested her head on Marley’s shoulder. “But I will be.”
