Chapter 17

I eyed the bags Kassius was carrying as we crossed the street to a public park. “Are you sure this is all necessary?” He had spent more money on me than I had expected.

He smiled back at me. “Yes.”

“Really?” I wasn’t convinced. “What about the dress?” I hadn’t forgotten about the most expensive article in the bottom of the bag.

He shrugged his shoulders. “I figured since we had to stay in Sapientia for the night, there were a couple of places you might like to see.”

My heart skipped. “Where are we going?”

He shook his head, not willing to give any detail. “You’ll just have to wait.”

I looked around the park; people were going for casual strolls and children were playing on the playground not far from where we were. “Are you sure it’s a good idea to be here?”

Kassius glanced back at me. “I think you blend in well.”

He was right, with my dark hair and the sunglasses, even I had difficulty recognizing myself. I looked around, searching out the faces in the crowd, and stopped when I reached the circular stone structure that was the centerpiece for the park. It was beautiful. It looked like a stage that had thick white stone columns that supported it. At the top of the columns, the stone was carved to look like dolphins. “What is that?” I asked, admiring the structure. There was so much detail put into every part of this society. It was impossible to think I was even sitting here, observing this right now.

“It’s called a Tholos. They have live performances here.”

“That sounds nice.” I smiled back at him. To the right of the Tholos was a wall of fountains, and behind that there was an iron fence that portioned off a part of the park that sloped up the base of the mountainside. Sitting on the enclosed land was an enormous stone building which seemed to be carved out of the mountainside—built to overlook the park. “And over there, what is that?”

“That’s the house of the Magistrate.”

My heart stuttered. It seemed dangerous to be sitting in such close proximity to the Magistrate, especially for an outsider like me. “Is it safe for me to be here right now?” I said, my voice cracking slightly.

Kassius looked back at me with his intense brown eyes. “Lexi, you are safe with me. I promise.”

Despite being so near this unknown danger, I did feel safe with him. “So, who is the Magistrate?”

“The Magistrate consists of three Obsidian Elders, all brothers. Abaris, Abdera, and Ames. They have ruled Obsidia for over seventy years.”

“Wow, seventy years? That’s like a lifetime.” A mental picture began to form of three wrinkled old men with long dark robes, sitting on thrones hunched over, and suddenly they didn’t seem so scary. “Kassius?”

“Yes?”

“What would they do to someone like me?” I knew so little about them, but from what I had heard, they meant danger.

I could tell he was contemplating his answer carefully. “I don’t know. But you don’t have to worry about that, because nothing is going to happen to you.
