“Carly, where have you been?” Ashley murmured as I shut the bedroom door behind me. I’d paced back and forth along the length of the balcony for the last ten minutes, bringing myself down from the dangerous high I’d felt minutes ago.

“Cooling off. How are you feeling?”

Ashley was under the blankets, her head propped up by pillows. Her now bloodshot eyes were half shut, and she had a serene smile stretched across her face.

“I’m thinking about our first kiss.” Ashley patted the bed. “Come here.” Her words were slurring even more than before. Instead of the bed, I sat on the chaise lounge by the window.

“Carly, did I ever tell you that when we first met I couldn’t take my eyes off you? I mean, that first day of school you were the only girl I saw, and that I thought about you all day long?” She whispered, then yawned.

“No, you never did, but it was the same for me, Ashley, and I’ve never forgotten a single minute we’ve spent together since.” I stretched out on the chaise, my feet hanging off the end. I glanced over at her and saw her eyes had closed, and wondered if she would remember anything about tonight. The dancing, the laughing, and the primal kiss that was like no other we’d shared before.

“I’ve missed you Ashley, so damn much.” I whispered.

Her breathing slowed, and minutes later when I heard her softly snoring, I stood and gazed down at her, wondering how I’d ever survive if she didn’t feel the same way I did.

This woman could destroy me. I’d never felt this way about anyone before, and if I was even remotely sane when it came to Ashley, I would leave her be, never bother her again. Protect my heart the way I always had, by ignoring it.

The urge to climb in bed and hold her tight was overwhelming, but how would she react in the morning to find my arms wrapped around her?

Instead of giving in to temptation, I kissed her forehead.

“I’m going to make you mine, Ashley James.” I whispered, and reluctantly left to sleep alone in the guest room.
