CHAPTER TWENTY

They woke early, shortly before dawn but just after the creatures of the forest had stopped singing. In silence, they extinguished the light inside their tent and stepped into the dewy forest. They were near the coast and tall trees gathered the fog and mist that condensed onto their branches and dripped down their trunks to water their roots. Strange types of fungus and lichen grew where the water trickled down the tree trunks. Even without his Darkvision fully engaged, Eric could see some of them because they glowed and pulsed with light.

With nary a word, Signe led them along the animal path and back to the trail through the forest. But before they could reach their intended route, a monster stepped into the path.

Eric reached instinctively into his Inventory for his cold scythe, but she gestured at him to freeze with the tiniest of flicks of her fingers.

He honestly didn’t see how this could be such a big deal. The creature before them looked like a bobcat—a big one, perhaps, but a bobcat all the same. He had seen massive trolls that were so big, they disguised themselves as boulders and trees. Even in his somewhat limited experience, he had seen skeletons of humans, centaurs, or worse, all animated with the sole purpose of killing him. He had seen massive Brood Rats as big as a bear and covered in acid-filled pustules.

Compared to all of them, this bobcat looked…well, almost friendly.

The creature’s fur was the color of the sand on the southern beach of this continent—the same sand this forest had used to transform into rich humus—and its belly was the color of white snow. Its spots were rimmed with black but were a rich brown, the same hue as the tree trunks in the early morning sun that now barely illuminated them. The ears were long, black on the outside and with tufts at the top. Its eyes were golden orbs with blackish-green slits that were locked on Signe.

There was something…more to the bobcat, but he couldn’t tell exactly what. Something in the way it held itself, perhaps, or the way its spots didn’t seem to remain completely still on its fur. It almost had an aura to it, but it could control such an ability if it did have it.

Stirred to caution, he used his Identify Monster Skill on it.
