THE NEXT DAY anticipation stirs in my stomach from the moment I wake up. I meet Ansley and Liv in the breakroom to grab some coffee and I tell them about my date. They're both excited for me and give me recommendations for what to order. It's a steakhouse and I love steak. After a few minutes, Lincoln walks in and eyes the three of us. Liv and I stand taller, but Ansley ignores him.

"Ladies, are you going to stay here chit chatting all day?" He addresses the three of us but his eyes are on Ansley. I side-eye Ansley to see she's looking at her fingernails. She turns to Liv and me.

"I'll see you, girls, later." She walks out of the breakroom, not acknowledging Lincoln at all. What the hell was that about? Lincoln watches her walk away and I swear I see disappointment or sadness on his face. Liv and I share a look as we leave the breakroom and get back to work. I want to go find Ansley and ask her what's wrong, but I have a meeting in a few minutes. I'm glad we're having a girl's night tomorrow night so I can make sure she's okay. I grab my phone and shoot her a quick text.

Me: Hey are you okay?

Ansley: Yeah. He just pissed me off and I'm not talking to him right now.

I stare at the text for a few seconds.

Me: Okay. Do you want to talk about it tomorrow night?

Ansley: Yeah. Maybe.

Not a resounding yes, so I won't push her, but I want her to know I'm here if she needs me.

Me: Okay. I'm here if you need me.

Ansley: Thank you Care! You're the best.

I sigh and put my phone back in my purse and walk to the conference room. We're getting closer to the release of this new app and I need more details from the IT team so we can market it correctly.

I wind up having to cancel lunch with Sebastian because we have some emails that have to be sent out to clients and potential clients by the end of the day. Because I'm sure as hell not working late. He was understanding and told me he couldn't wait for our date. At five o'clock on the dot, I'm turning the light off in my office and heading toward the elevator. I see Lincoln walking into Ansley's office and closing the door. I stop short and want to go over to rescue her, but Liv is sidling up next to me.

"What do you think is happening?" I ask her and she sighs looking at me.

"I don't know. I'm hoping we'll find out tomorrow." Part of me still wants to go barge in, but I follow Liv's lead and head to the elevator. Liv begins texting on her phone. We get on the elevator when the doors open and take the ride to the first floor in silence. Stepping out she puts her phone away.

"Ansley says she's fine and Lincoln is being his typical domineering asshole self.
