Chapter Twelve

Tally did not sleep well, which did not help when she rose earlier than usual so she could unpack the rest of her clothes and dig out what she needed for another morning of farm call. Of course her second pair of boots were in the last box, helpfully marked miscellaneous. Once dressed in serviceable khaki pants she could move around in and wouldn’t mind getting dirty, a T-shirt, and a light pullover sweater, she had a quick breakfast with two cups of coffee and was on her way. Her Bug handled well on the twisting roads, and her thoughts drifted back to the night before. In hindsight, the whole evening felt like an episode of Stranger Things. Never would she have guessed she’d end up shopping in a hardware store with Rome Ashcroft. And having a good time. Rome was funny and complicated and, when she talked about her time in the military, unnervingly honest and undeniably unaware of just how much she revealed about herself when she did.

And then there was what she’d thought was about to happen that couldn’t possibly be happening that had kept her awake half the night. Because if Rome had actually been planning to kiss her, and she’d actually been about to let her, then she had totally lost her mind. There could be no other explanation. But she’d come to her senses in time, and now she’d be on guard against any further moments of insanity.

Tally clung to that very rational thought as she pulled into the clinic lot.

She’d wanted to be early, but the mobile unit was in the lot next to Val’s red pickup truck, and the lights were on in the rear of the building. She found Val inside in the kennel area examining an elderly dog they’d admitted the day before to hydrate and treat his newly diagnosed diabetes.

“Hi,” Tally said. “Sorry, I thought I gave myself plenty of time.”

Val looked over her shoulder and smiled. “No problem. You are early.” She closed the kennel door, made a quick note on the chart, and said, “This one looks much better than yesterday afternoon.”

“Hey, Hector, who’s a good boy?” Tally crooned, walking over to the dog’s pen. The aging white pitbull mix raised his blocky head and wagged his tail. “Mm, yes, he looks much more alert today. That’s great.”

“It is. Mildred Porter would be lost without this dog. Wherever she goes, he goes, including the bank, the hairdresser’s, and the IGA. I think everybody in town knows them both.”

“You think she’ll be able to manage his medical treatment?”

“We might need to check in on her a little bit at the beginning, but I think she’ll manage the insulin injections just fine. Anything for Hector.” Val laughed. “Although getting his weight down a little might be a challenge. I think he and Mildred eat a lot of the same foods.”

Tally laughed. “I’ll make sure to go over the diet plan and the new food options with her when she comes to pick him up.
