Sunday 0630 hours

It didn’t take long for the fire trucks to get to the location, which was what he was counting on. As the smoke puffed, swirled, and filled the neighborhood, several people came out of their homes to watch the display. It was his doing—he was responsible and that’s what gave him peace. He was doing what was right. It was Cindy’s last performance and the girl never realized it was her best. He smiled, congratulating himself. Well done, well done.

What had captured his attention was when the two detectives arrived. They intrigued him, especially the woman. Her partner was also fascinating, with his tall stature and awareness. Although the woman didn’t need anyone to validate her, she was strong and shrewd. A bit like his mother. After quietly watching her looking for him at the Pane Construction areas, he had searched the internet on crime news from Pine Valley Sheriff’s Department and found out more about her and her partner. They had made quite a name for themselves solving their cases. Until now…

It didn’t take long for those precious memories to surface again. After watching the way Detective Scott moved around and interacted with others in a confident and careful manner, it brought his mother to mind. It was a usual day at school and he was in the fifth grade and only days after his tenth birthday. He was excited about receiving an A on his math test. Walking into his house, he was yelling for his mom but didn’t see her. She wasn’t where she usually was, either in the kitchen or living room. He put his things down and noticed the door to the garage was open. When he went out to the garage, there was his mother… Her beautiful long blonde hair with subtle bangs, dressed in her most favorite yellow dress… She hung lifeless from the rafters with a rope around her neck. Her body perfectly still… her hair and makeup flawless.

At that defining moment everything changed and he was going to make everyone pay.

A ringtone from his cell phone jolted him back to the present. He quickly swiped the screen and settled on a live video feed of Jasmine tied up in his basement. He smiled. She struggled and cried, kicking her feet. The tape across her mouth kept in her screams for help. He wasn’t sure why he’d kept her alive, but there was something captivating about her and until he had no use for her—which could be any day or hour—she would stay with him. He put his phone back in his pocket.

Even though his mission was obvious, with the wannabes of the acting and modeling world who needed to be taught a lesson, it still didn’t mean that he couldn’t have something fun for himself. He deserved it.

He watched Katie speak with one of the firemen and then what looked to be a fire investigator. He observed her movements and body language. It was clear she was concerned and even a bit frustrated.
