“This is Castle Island,” said Clarence. “Remember it?”

“Sorry, I don’t.”

“Not to worry, Bic. Hang on while I pull in.”

They had taken a long trip through a maze through weeds and Cypress trees to get here. The bald trees with their thick, ropey, bell-shaped bottoms and branches covered in Spanish moss stood all around them, like stately bulwarks obscuring the island from outsiders. The still swamp water, barely disturbed by the rippling wake of the boat, was dotted all around with jagged stone formations—things like gray mini-icebergs sticking out of the water.

They were in some sort of compound, a swamp plantation with small cottages nestled within the vegetation, and a fortified, two-story cement bunker in the center, a boxy structure covered with moss that sprouted from it rather than having settled onto it.

“Don’t get out of the boat,” Clarence said with a smile, “’less you want to go out in pieces.”

It was then that Bic saw one of the stone formations in the water begin to move. Then another. They were all coming toward the boat.

Gators.

“This is how we’ve survived, son,” Clarence said, picking up one of the dozen nutria carcasses they had stashed on the boat and tossing it into the water.

The gators converged on it. And Clarence picked up another carcass and chucked it in. It landed with a heavy splash. The gators converged again.

“Well, don’t just sit there, Bic, it’s feeding time.”

It’s feeding time…

He picked up a pork chop and…

Pork chop? Why did he think that? Swamp rat corpse. Not a pork chop. He felt a queasy sensation in his gut. Handling the stinking carcass, still warm, made the anger roil in him. He chucked it with hatred in his heart. It splashed. He picked up another and chucked it, he wanted to see the thing ripped to shreds. Even though it was dead, for some reason, it didn’t seem dead enough.

He felt the old man’s eyes on him but shrugged it off. He didn’t care who saw him like this. He chucked another rat, feeling a throaty grunt escape his throat as he did. The old man had stopped throwing them altogether. He realized this only after he’d chucked the final one.

He stared at the carnage in the water, his breath chopping at his chest.

“You remember something Bic?” The old man’s voice was full of concern.

“I don’t know,” Bic said in a harsh whisper.

“You can tell me, you know.”

Bic watched the gators fight like savages over the remaining meat.

“Ok. You just take it easy now. Let’s get on land before these puppies come back for seconds.”

They tied the boat, hopped onto the dock, and headed toward the bunker.

“Where are we?” Bic asked.

Clarence smiled and spread his arms. “I told you. Castle Island. This is where I do my business, Bic. You used to help me here.”

Bic looked around. “Did I like it?”

Clarence chuckled. “I don’t think it’s a matter of liking or not liking anything, son. You did your job. You helped your daddy do his job. We survived.
