In the interest of fairness, it is worth noting that the phenomenon of hypocrisy is not limited to latte liberals. As Republicans have increased their appeal to working-class voters (including rural and/or churchgoing folks), their opportunities for hypocrisy have increased proportionally.

Perhaps no one in Congress represents the current Republican zeitgeist quite like Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA). Greene first rose to prominence with a Facebook Live performance that showed her grilling local library officials about a “drag queen story hour.”

You can probably guess what she thought about the CDC recommendations during the COVID-19 pandemic: Greene was a vocal opponent of mask mandates and other CDC guidelines. In fact, when Speaker Nancy Pelosi instituted a mask mandate in the House of Representatives, Greene likened it to the gold stars of David that Nazis forced Jews to wear during the Holocaust. She bragged that she incurred $25,000 in fines for refusing to wear masks in the chamber.72 Incidentally, that’s just less than half the median income of the typical household in her district.

So you can understand why a fellow airline passenger had fun at her expense, snapping and tweeting a surreptitious photo of Greene obediently wearing a mask while reclining in her first-class seat. It was retweeted by original Squad member Representative Ilhan Omar, who called out Greene’s hypocrisy for wearing a mask and for flying first class.

Omar—the leading proponent of the legislation to cancel rent and send money to the landlords co-sponsoring her bill—apparently saw no irony in calling out Greene’s hypocrisy. “I love how she walks around railing against mask mandates but time and time again complies when no one is paying attention. Typical hypocrite cult leader,” Omar tweeted.73

That’s so funny it might make latte come out of your nose. Or beer (if you’re Elizabeth Warren cracking open a cold one). More on Warren’s penchant for pilsners in our next chapter.
