The hours ticked by in the seedy bar with Ian. They drank, laughed, and chatted with some locals that all explained how they’d met the infamous Blaze. The place and people were some of the sketchiest she’d ever met, but they were authentic and comfortable with who they were. Nobody was trying to be something they weren’t.

“After the poor woman passed out, the husband wasn’t sure what to do,” the bartender, Aaron, said in the middle of a story about a woman celebrating her 40th birthday while Blaze was on duty at the bar. Apparently one patron had passed out drunk and landed on the floor of the bar.

“Why didn’t the husband just carry her out?” she hung on every word. Aaron was a nut. An overweight man-child, full of enthusiasm, confident and carefree. The perfect fit for such an establishment.

“The dude was about a buck fifty, and she was…” Aaron cringed, “a robust woman. Now, I’m not one to judge on that,” he patted his own large belly, “but still it created a problem when she was married to mister Skinny Minnie.”

“Ah.” She nodded in understanding.

“Hubs and a few of his friends kept trying to get her out, and she’s flopping all over the place like a fish out of water. He was freaking out about her getting arrested for public intoxication if they called for help.” Aaron shook his head.

She looked to Ian. “So, what did you do?”

Ian chimed in. “What I had to do.” He took a swig and shrugged. “I deadlifted her ass off the floor and carried her out of the bar to the back of her husband’s car.”

“He’s a damn lucky sonofabitch that he didn’t break his back…again.” He smirked and something passed between their eyes as Ian shifted uncomfortably in his stool. Aaron laughed and clasped him on the shoulder. “The man has no fear and fucking balls of steel.” His hazel eyes bore into Brandi’s before turning away.

She opened her mouth to ask him to elaborate, but the words caught in her throat. Maybe this wasn’t the time or place. And on top of it, nature was calling due to the drinks she’d consumed. “Excuse me; I’ll be right back.” She rubbed Ian on the back and walked to the restroom.

She did her business, eyeing the crass graffiti on the walls and laughing at the crude comments. This was her third trip to the restroom tonight, and she caught something new every time. Her favorite so far was the one that read, “The Chamber of Secrets is in the next stall.” She flushed and washed up, chuckling again at the paper towel holder that was merely a coat hanger on a nail in the wall. This place would only be more of a dive if it was at the bottom of the ocean.

“He likes you,” a female chimed to her right.

She jolted and clutched her chest, too tipsy to realize that she wasn’t alone. Her poor liver would need a detox cleanse after this week.
