Chapter Thirteen

Chad had cooled off for a few days but was finally back in the gym on Wednesday after a long talk with Rich. The older man had apologized for not being up front and tried to get him to talk to Kendall too.

Kendall was a different story. He wasn’t ready to forgive and forget even though he recognized he had been an asshole on Saturday.

Training had started out slow today and was picking up in intensity when he felt the air change in the room. As though he had conjured her up from thin air just by thinking about her, Kendall walked into the gym.

Her eyes sought him out from across the wide, open space, and she held his gaze for just a second before looking away. No matter to him—he was back to focusing on his workout, getting ready for a boxing sparring match later.

Focus was something he’d rarely struggled with before she’d come into his life, but now he couldn’t think straight. She needed to find a new story, fast, and get the hell back out of the gym.

She walked around the gym for an hour and chatted with several different people. They all seemed excited to talk to her, and she had her phone out for each person as though she was interviewing them for real.

The longer she stayed, the more frustrated he got. If she wouldn’t leave him alone about this story on her own, then he’d make sure she understood he was off-limits.

With a thud, he dropped the weights he’d barely been using and walked over to her. “What are you doing here?”

“Trying to save my job.” She didn’t look up at him, but clicked her phone off and set it down on the bench she was currently occupying.

“I told you I don’t want any articles.”

“I didn’t come here to ask you for one.”

“Nope, you never did that.”

“I am not writing about you. If you need proof, I’ll send Dad my next article before it goes to print. Hint taken. Now leave me alone as I have you.”

“Find something else to write about,” he told her.

“I have permission to be here.” She looked up at him calmly. “I am not leaving, but I will leave you alone. Best I can do.”

“Best you can do? What the fuck is that supposed to mean?”

“I’m still going to write about the fighting world. You can’t stop me. You don’t own the press.”

The fact that he could own the press crossed his mind briefly. He could buy it right now and demand she never write about him or the fights again. That wouldn’t solve shit, so he let the thought fly past.

“It’s dangerous here,” he reminded her. “I’m not going to be there to save your ass next time.”

“It wasn’t my ass that needed saving. It was yours, or you could have gone to jail, too, or worse.” She stood up, jabbing a finger at him as she spoke. “McDonnell was after you, not me.”

“Go interview him then!” he yelled back at her.
