CHAPTER 20

It was Sonny’s first visit to China, and the most populous country in the world lived up to his expectations. He’d spent time in Hong Kong when it was still a British colony, and Shenyang felt much the same—the streets teeming with people, and traffic a noisy constant. He’d expected a few more authentic Chinese-style buildings, but instead the city bristled with modern creations. On his way from the airport, he saw more skyscrapers than he could count.

Among them was the Shangri-La Hotel.

Sonny was stunned by the opulence as he strolled through the entrance. He’d seen places like this in Dubai and New York but hadn’t imagined such things existed in China’s lesser cities. He felt as if cash were draining from his pocket with every step he took.

As he walked toward the reception desk, he heard a familiar voice from the left.

“Sonny!”

Eva hadn’t changed a bit. Well, the hair was different, but he’d seen her with three styles and colors since their first meeting more than two years ago. That apart, she looked exactly as he remembered.

Stunning.

For Sonny, though, looks were not the most memorable thing about Eva Driscoll. She possessed skills that many Special Forces soldiers would be proud of. More importantly, Sonny had always felt that her heart was in the right place. She would take on anyone to see justice done and the helpless protected, which reminded him of his dear friends Len Smart and Tom Gray. Both had proven time and again that loyalty was paramount. Eva Driscoll was cast from the same mold.

He walked over and offered a smile and his hand. To his surprise, she pulled him in close and hugged him.

“Thanks for coming,” she said.

“Wouldn’t miss it for the world.” He eased himself off her. “So, which government do you need help overthrowing?”

“Nothing like that,” Eva said as she led him to the elevators. “I’ll tell you when we get to the room.”

They rode to the eighteenth floor and walked down the corridor. When they reached 1803, Sonny stopped but Eva kept walking.

“We’re going to meet the man who’s organizing everything for us. There’s still a lot of planning to do.”

She knocked on the next door, and a youngish, Chinese-looking man opened it, beckoning them in.

“This is Wong,” Eva said. “Wong, Sonny.”

The men shook hands. “The restaurant is doing well, I hope,” said Wong.

Sonny was caught by surprise. “How—”

“He’s ESO,” Eva said, taking a seat. “If you ever wondered if they knew where you were, there’s your answer.”

Sonny was stunned. He thought he’d shaken the ESO for good, but the last eighteen months had evidently been a sham. If they knew about his business, they probably had his home address and the ID he used in New Zealand, too.

More concerning, Eva seemed strangely relaxed in the ESO man’s presence.

“You’re working for these people?”

Eva shrugged. “It’s complicated.”

“Try me.”

She sighed. “They blackmailed me into doing a job for them. I had to go into North Korea and help someone defect. I did that, and now I want to go back in to save some others.
