We went through a park, Felix promising me it was a shortcut to the club. He could have been right, for I could hear the loud bassy thudding of a nearby club. The park was incredibly dark though, only three street lamps cast anywhere near a modicum of light, but they were blotted out by large trees lining the iron railings.

It was halfway through this empty park, as Felix sang ‘Sex Bomb’ by Tom Jones (badly) when we were accosted. Two dark human shaped things stepped out of the bushes nearest us. I instinctively jumped back out of shock, straight into the firm stance of another. This firm person proceeded to grip me tightly by the shoulders. I gulped, heart racing in my chest. Felix withdrew his wand, the end of which lit up with a soft blue glow.

“Now now boys,” Felix said. “Don’t do something you’re going to regret.”

One of the men stepped forwards into the shallow pool of light. His face was white as ice, hair long, dark and dead and his eyes were a desperate black.

“I think it’s you that needs to not do something you will regret.” He spoke with a soft silkiness, and a nervous energy that I could only liken to that of a drug addict. Which was quite apt, seeing as these three men were the vampires that were in the pub earlier.

“You followed us?” I said, attempting to wrestle out of the firm grip when I realised what they were. Except it simply tightened harder.

“Oi Eric you fat waster, come here!” commanded the silky voiced vampire. Into the light stepped a sweaty, overweight man who looked to be in his mid twenties and had a very nervous disposition. He trembled as he stood beside his superior. “We need to train you up, lesson one is how to deal with silly wizards.”

“Who are you working for?” said Felix pointing the wand slightly higher.

The silky voiced vampire licked his dry lips. “We don’t work for no one! We is independent. We is Freelancers.”

“So you’ve come to… capture me, for a reward?”

“Yep, that’s it. Quite a nice, big reward too. Should… sustain us for a while.”

“Henry,” called the large one holding me.

The silky voiced one shot him an evil glance. “Don’t use my name you dumbo!”

“Sorry Boss,” said the one holding me. “It’s just I think we should use the net I brought along and take them to him in that.”

Henry, the silky voiced vampire shook his head in an exasperated fashion. “No, no, we agreed, we take them partially-dead. Otherwise this wriggly bastard will get out.”

“Yeah, but you said this was a democracy and we get more if they’re in good condition.”

It was like we were fine works of china. Not human beings.

“But I am the leader!” Henry barked. “So what I say goes.”

The dopey one holding me gave an unhappy sigh. Felix, who watched on fairly amused by the whole show said, “how much you getting for capturing me?”

Henry deemed this an appropriate question.
