CHAPTER FOURTEEN

She’s said it. The one thing she’d promised herself she would never tell him. It was stupid, really. She knew he loved her. He knew she loved him.

“I want you. I love you.”

He might as well have kicked her in the gut with all his demon strength. Being stabbed repeatedly would have hurt less than the pain those words brought on.

Kit knew she shouldn’t say the same to him. She knew this wasn’t his fault, but she said it anyway. A small part of her wanted him to suffer for what she was going through. She’d said it and as she watched the words tear his heart out, she instantly regretted it.

His eyes turned to pools of fire and she felt the heat wave hit her as he lost control.

“Jens.” She swallowed hard. “Breathe.”

“I... I can’t.” His forehead pressed to hers and she closed her eyes. “I can’t breathe without you.”

She moved her hands to his chest with every intention of pushing him back. They paused there for a moment before moving to his waist.

She heard Jens suck in a breath. He stayed perfectly still. This was her decision. It had always been her decision. He’d made up his mind when he was eight. His flames were flicking towards her. He’d picked her the day he’d punched the kid picking one her all those years ago and now she had to decide.

“You won’t get your full power,” she whispered.

“I don’t care.” His hands came up and settled against the wall on either side of her head. “I won’t need full power, I’m giving away every last drop of my magic if that’s what I have to do to keep you.”

“What? I don’t understand.”

“I can’t have you because of my power. Everything comes back to my fucking power. I need the ritual to control it so I can’t hurt you, but if I do the ritual, I can’t have you. No power, no problem. You’re more important than power.”

“Is that... can you do that?”

“I'm not sure,” he admitted.

“What if you can’t?”

“Then we’ll deal with it. Together.”

Her entire body shaking, she shifted the angle of her head until their lips were almost touching. Was it possible? Could this actually work? And then, what if it did work? What if this happened and it worked and he regretted it later? “Jens, you have to be sure,” she whispered.

“I was sure seventeen years ago. That’s when I chose you.”

She closed the last bit of distance between their lips, the same current of energy flowing into her as it had when she’d kissed him in the fire. Jens’ flames surrounded them both as he picked her up, pressing her to the wall at his level.

Kit wrapped her legs around his waist, groaning as he deepened the kiss. She rocked against him, needing to get closer and he sucked in a breath.

All the years of wanting to touch him, actually feeling him, exploring him. All the years of needing to kiss him...
