Chapter Sixteen

“Hey.” Brendan blinked the sleepiness out of his eyes and hoisted himself up against Jeannie’s headboard. “What time is it?”

She turned and smiled at him from across the room, where she was typing away on her laptop. She wore his T-shirt and looked fresh and bright in the morning light streaming in the window beside her. For his part, Brendan hadn’t slept so soundly in ages. Being on the road meant sleeping every night or two in a different place, surrounded by unfamiliar sheets, smells, and sounds, any of which was liable to wake him. He felt like all he did anymore was doze. But after a couple of hours exploring Jeannie and being explored in turn, laughing and moaning, he’d felt at home in her bed. They’d wrapped limbs around each other and drifted into dreamland for what felt like hours.

“It’s coming up to eight. Do you have—what’s your timeline today? I can drop you at your hotel, or you can stick around here until whenever, I guess.”

Raking his hands through his hair, Brendan tried to guess her underlying message. She wanted him gone? She wanted him to stay in her bed all day? She wanted to stay in bed with him all day?

His cock approved of the last idea.

Jeannie was still smiling, and she was checking out his bare chest, and nothing about her said get out of my house. So he stretched and threw off the sheet, happy to be watched. Happier if he was touched. “Come here.”

There she went biting her lip again. No way could he hide what the flash of her teeth did to his arousal. She moved to sit at the foot of the bed, captured his calf in his palm, and began tracing the muscles. “I’m here.”

“Tease. Not close enough.” He stretched to pull her to him.

But she evaded his reach. “I’ve got meetings. I need to be out the door in forty minutes.”

“A challenge? I can make forty minutes work for both of us.”

She laughed. “Trust me, Brendan. I have no doubts. You could even make four minutes work for us. But I have to shower and finish up this presentation—Dr. Castillo at the hospital emailed back this morning. She made time this morning to talk about your concert. So, as tempting as you are, I’m going to have to pass.”

Brendan slid toward her as she made excuses. She didn’t move away from the foot of the bed and didn’t stop touching whichever part of his leg was closest to her. Her fingertips trailed over his shin, then his kneecap. By the time she was done explaining how much morning sex wasn’t going to happen, his feet hung toward the floor, and she was tracing circles on his thigh. Brendan grinned. Her actions didn’t sync with her words, and the way she was examining his body showed she knew it. He tapped on her knee and she squeezed his inner thigh in response.

“I have the perfect solution.”

“Mmm?”

He walked his fingers up her leg.
