He shouldn’t stare.

And yet he couldn’t look away either. Brygida was here next to him, on this muddy road, surrounded by barren fields, under the same bleak gray sky as him. It was hard to believe she was made of flesh and blood and not Mokosza herself come to spare him. When they’d first met, she’d reminded him of a forest leśna nimfa, ethereal and transient, with milk-pale skin and auburn cascades of hair.

With her scythe in hand, she was a different person. There was a luminous glow to her, a sense of a gathering storm hidden in the restless fluttering of her robe. She caught him staring and smiled in response. It was a beam of sunshine through the clouds.

He couldn’t tear himself away from her violet eyes. If he were to paint her, what color could he use to capture the faint rosy blush that swept over her cheeks and nose, or render the shape of her ochre-brown freckles?

As he rubbed his chin absent-mindedly, an ache radiated through his jaw. A bruise forming—another one.

What was he thinking, daydreaming about painting Brygida while Roksana’s murderer was still on the loose? Roksana deserved better. That, and the entire village was after his head and more...

They’d been ready to take a knife to him, and they’d almost taken his manhood. He flinched just remembering it. Had Brygida arrived a second too late…

He shook his head to rid himself of the thought. If he weren’t a fool, he’d run back home to the safety of his father’s castle and wait for this storm to pass.

But he had to find answers. And perhaps Stefan was right and he was a fool, but with Brygida, he felt safer. Her power could do what a single sword couldn’t. It had called down the rain and the lightning, flooded the land, ruled the water’s own will. No, she had. And it had been the most awe-inspiring thing he’d ever witnessed.

For the moment, he was safe. The peasants wouldn’t dare interfere with Mokosza’s servant, and he’d use the bulwark her power provided to uncover the truth at Roksana’s home.
