Chapter Nine

Seth rolled his eyes when he saw yet another email from his brother. This was getting ridiculous. Rowan was practically wearing out the internet, sending one email after the other. Seth had stopped looking at them after the fourth demand that he come home. He wasn't going back. His brother needed to accept that.

Seth moved his mouse and went to hit delete, but a prickling of unease at the base of his skull made him open the email instead. He gazed closer, his eyes narrowing as he read the words in the email.

His blood ran cold.

"Fucking hell!" Seth jumped up and started for the front door, intending to drive into town and phone Rowan, demanding answers, but then he realized he simply couldn't leave. He had to shut down his house first, or it had the potential to not be here when he came back.

He quickly went around the cabin, shutting everything down and making sure it was all locked up. At another thought, he grabbed his backpack and tossed in some clothes.

The telephone was in town, which was two hours away. The city was on the other side of that. If he needed to head to the city, he didn't want to have to drive back to get his stuff then turn around and drive to the city after that.

It was a long drive.

Seth finished locking everything up then pulled on his jacket and grabbed his bag. He cast one more look around the cabin to make sure he'd turned everything off before heading for the door.

Seth refused to admit he squealed like a girl at a haunted house when he opened the door, but the noise that came out of his mouth definitely wasn't manly. He pressed a hand to his chest, right over his rapidly beating heart.

"What are you doing here, Rowan?" It didn't matter that he'd been on his way to town to call his brother. He never expected the man to show up on his doorstep. He didn't even think Rowan knew where he lived.

Guess he was wrong.

Rowan arched an eyebrow. "You don't call. You don't visit. You don't send messages by carrier pigeon. What else was I supposed to do?"

"I was headed for the phone, you know."

"Really?" Rowan didn't sound convinced.

Seth held up his backpack.

"Making a run for it?"

Seth breathed deep. It never paid to go off on Rowan, no matter how much he might want to. His brother was really good at getting his revenge. "I was headed to the phone to call you so I could find out what happened to Casey."

"He's missing."

Seth clenched his jaw for a moment before speaking. "Yes, your email said that. I'm trying to find out what happened."

Rowan's eyes clouded, and the corners of his lips turned down. "We don't know."

That was so not helpful.

"What do you know, Rowan?"

Rowan nodded toward the interior of the cabin. "Can I come in, or are we going to have this conversation out on the porch?"

Seth clenched his jaw again as he stood back, holding the door open for Rowan.
