“It’s a ritual,” Maya said. “What the hell? Something’s happening.”

A form took shape in the smoke that rose from the central fire, vaguely human, except for a smoky tail where its legs should be. It had arms, a torso, a head. Its face morphed in and out, the shape changing.

I’ve never seen anything like that and I’ve been exploring the occult my whole life, El said.

“Where are the rest of the amulets, Arthur?” The words came from a tall, male figure. He wore a black cloak with a hood so deep you couldn’t see his face within its shadows. He was holding something in one outstretched hand, something small enough to fit entirely within his fist. “Tell us.”

“Arthur? As in Arthur Kendall?” Kiley whispered.

“Has to be,” Maya said. “What does that half-assed witch have in his hand? Wait, is there a chain dangling from it?”

Kiley squinted, leaning closer to get a better look. “I think it is a chain. A small one, like a necklace chain.”

Talisman. No doubt about it.

“Where are they, Arthur?” The man said, thrusting his fist nearer like a weapon.

The shape in the smoke twisted. A mouth shape opened in the grotesque face, and then there was a moan, an o-shaped sound that might’ve been the word no, all drawn out in an anguished moan.

“They’re hurting him!” Maya sprang up with a rock in her hand and whipped it at the guy holding the chain. It hit his fist dead on. The man yelped, and the thing he’d been holding dropped to the ground.

He turned their way, still holding his injured hand and shouted, “It’s the blonde. Get her!” And they all started running toward the rock barricade.

Maya jumped up. “He dropped the chain-thingie. Get it!” Then she ran off in plain sight, knowing damn well they’d all follow.

What the hell did she think was going to happen if they killed her? Shit. Kiley climbed over the rock she’d been hiding behind, and ran to the little fire. On the ground there was a round, gold colored medallion with multiple symbols engraved in its face. She snatched it up and realized by its weight, it wasn’t just gold-colored. It was gold. She shoved it onto her robe pocket, and felt it go straight through the hole she’d forgot was there. It hit the ground at her feet, so she grabbed it again and put it around her neck this time. Then she took off after Maya’s pursuers.
