5. Next take the midpoint of each of the short sides of the parallelogram in each hand and gather the sinamay. This helps to soften the stiffener in the sinamay, making it easier to manipulate and sew through.

6. The resulting shape should look like this.

7. Open up the parallelogram shape again. Secure your thread at the midpoint of one of the short sides and (using double-strength thread) do a running stitch down the center of the parallelogram, gathering the sinamay as you go.

8. Keep on gathering the sinamay, gently pulling the thread through until the two narrower ends of the parallelogram are as close together as possible, forming the same shape as you did previously in Step 6. Don’t pull the thread too hard or it may snap. You can now stitch through the gathered central point several times to hold this shape in place.
