Chapter 24
After spending a couple hours with my sisters, I returned to the academy and found Harvey waited for me in his lounge chair. He was knitting socks. I brought him up to speed.
I should explain, Harvey wasnât like other witch familiars, in two important ways: He didnât like people, and he wasnât a cat.
Iâll never understand why the universe made me allergic to cats, or why they chose to give me a rare rabbit for a familiar, but I had no choice in the matter. Itâs not like witches can send their familiars back into the mystical ether. Harvey appeared on my fifth birthday, and told me he would stay with me until my last breath.
My mother thought the oddness of my familiar might have something to do with my fae blood. I donât know about that, but I am far beyond caring about his origins. I have learned to live with his cowboy talk, love of comics, and knitting hobby. He has proven to be a devoted familiar, who amplifies my magic and counsels me. I just wished he didnât hide from people, so they would stop thinking me crazy.
After Harvey dozed off listening to my detailed analysis of the state of witch affairs in town, I opened my laptop to check my messages. There was nothing from Sapphire yet, so I wrote a note to Alessandro. I told him about the murders, though I assumed he already knew, and assured him that I would start classes soon.
I went over my lists, and everything seemed in order. Tonightâs classes should go as planned. I had three teachers in place, three students, and the floors shone with wax. What more could I do?
âHow about an escape plan?â said Harvey.
The bunny had a point, but one I could think about later. I headed upstairs for a quick nap and dinner. As dusk settled into the landscape, I broke out the pasta box.
I could feel Onyxâs presence. He might live on the other side of a silver door, but his vampire energy seeped through the walls. I stilled my thoughts. Ah. He wasnât alone. There was more than one predator on the other side of the wall.
Crash.
The sound came from the wall between us, which shook from the impact of something hitting it.
Crash.
This time, the sound was more distant, but the walls of my room still shook.
Crash.
A third time! Enough of this. I expected Onyx to be a lousy neighbor, but this was ridiculous. Was he fighting with one of the students or a teacher? Just how did he plan to bring his brethren into line? I couldnât have him using violence.
I put my spaghetti noodles in the boiling water and went to the silver door. I tapped on it gently.
Silence.
I knocked. A second later the door swung open, and I found myself face to face with Alessandro.
His long, thick chestnut hair looked ruffled. âRebel, how nice it is to see you.â He said this sweetly, but his fangs were hanging out.
