My thoughts weighed heavily that night as I pulled back the sheets and thought of all the things that had happened between Nora and me the last few days. We shared a connection and a kiss hotter than anything I’d had before, but we barely knew each other and I didn’t want to scare her away. Sometimes Nora looked at me like she was a tiny bunny and I was the wolf waiting to gobble her up. It wasn’t far from the truth, but I wanted to coax the bunny into my den. If Nora came to me, she needed to do it with her own conviction. I wouldn’t force her because after what happened with Pete and his mother, I needed the reassurance Nora would be the one to stick around for the long haul.

Words wouldn’t do my feelings justice, but even though I wanted to clobber her over the head and drag her to my bed like a caveman, that wouldn’t be the way to win her heart. The problem was I didn’t know how. My money and good looks didn’t sway Nora. She wasn’t like buying stock where I analyzed the ROI and previous investment opportunities. There wasn’t a magical math formula to figure her out. Nora consisted of a big messy ball of emotions.

My mind was full of ways to win her over, but even fancy vacations, big diamonds, or a romantic meal didn’t seem enough to capture Nora’s heart. She had been through a lot and smelled bullshit from a mile away. My emotions and feelings might have been sincere, but I needed to make sure she understood their depth.

I turned off the bedroom light and stepped out of my boxers, preferring to sleep naked, when something caught my eye out of the bedroom window. A light shown from Pete’s playhouse.

“What the hell?” We hadn’t wired it for electricity yet. The light was not bright enough for a flashlight but almost looked as if someone had a cell phone app to see in the dark. What in the world would someone be doing in my son’s playhouse? It was bigger than a normal one, constructed of fine wood and built in the backyard. It was my mother’s idea of a simple gift, even though Pete wouldn’t be old enough to play in it for a few years. No one in my family did anything mediocre.

I jammed my boxers back over my hips and grabbed a baseball bat from the hall closet as I snuck out the back door and crept through the desert landscape in my yard.

The door to the playhouse stood open, and I walked on tiptoes with the bat raised high. A shadow came in from the corner and I pulled back, ready to swing my hardest, when a scream broke through the night sky.

“What the FUCK?”

“Nora?” I asked, dropping the bat with a clatter at my feet as it hit the dusty rocks.

She jumped back into the playhouse, clutching a hand to her chestmwith her eyes wide.
